The relationship between an organization and environment - essay

In earlier studies, the relationship between an organization and environment is only seen through the lenses of environmental scanning. There have been many attempts to prove the significance of environmental scanning for strategic purpose (Yunggar, 2005; Lenz & Engledow, 1986; Hambrick, 1982). Other researchers have assessed the role of managerial perceptions in environmental scanning and its effects on the organization (Barr, 1998; Mason & Lefebvre, 1997). These researches, although being effective, have overemphasized on the role of environment neglecting the contribution of the organization in this relationship. The organization and environment share a closed loop interaction. Environment affects the organization followed by the generation of a response from the organization, thus completing the cycle. It implies that the effect of environment on the organization cannot be fully understood without evaluating the organizational response. The main rationale of this study is to explore the relationship between the organization and environment by going beyond the conventional limits offered by environmental scanning. The aim of the study is to analyze the environmental impact and organizational response in context of small businesses in India. Although some studies (Chattopadhyay, 2001) of similar nature have been done in past, but they relate to developed economies like US, thus providing enough room for improvisation. The study will focus on analysis of "Response Mechanisms" developed by organizations against environmental changes, thus will be able to fill an important gap in the literature. The study will contribute towards better understanding of organization-environment interaction resulting in better organizational strategies to cope with environmental changes.

A note on content before getting to grammar. You need to define "environmental scanning." Some corrections: "In earlier studies, the relationship between an organization and environment was only seen through the lens of environmental scanning." One sentence starts with "There have been..." and the next with "Other researchers..." To make these sentences consistent, the first should start with "Some researchers..." or even the names of the researchers and then phrased appropriately. "These findings, although valid, ~~have~~ overemphasize on the role of environment, neglecting the contribution of the organization to the relationship. "An organization and its environment share a closed loop interaction."

I am afraid that can't understand what the purpose of the study is because the terms and issues are not defined. Perhaps, I am not technical enough is the problem. . rolandj727: I am afraid that can't understand what the purpose of the study is because the terms and issues are not defined. Right, though it's all a matter of audience. If this is written for an audience for whom "environmental scanning" is a technical term needing no definition, fine. But if it is for anyone else, then such terms must be defined. It's always better to err on the safe side and provide definitions wherever they might be needed.

It doesn't help that you're using fairly broad, vague terms. "Organization" covers a lot, here -- government department, business, NGO, etc. As for the term "environment," that includes pretty much everything around us, from the furniture in the room I am sitting in to the vast forests in the rural areas outside of the city. I'd suggest using specific examples to demonstrate your points, though as Simone says, depending upon who your intended audience is, this may not be strictly necessary.

Beginning of the part Business environment comprises of various internal and external forces under which the organization operates. It plays a very crucial role in the business. It shapes the ability of the organization to maintain successful relationships with its customers. Successful firms know the importance of constantly watching and adapting to the changes in the business environment (Kotler et al, 2005). Dibb et al (2006) categorizes the business environment into macro and micro factors. Macro environmental factors have a universal impact on every organization operating in a particular market e.g. Economic environment, political environment etc. Micro environmental factors, on other hands, have an organization specific impact e.g. suppliers, customers etc. The diagram below elaborates both macro and micro environmental factors. The change in the business environment brings both opportunities and threats for the organization. To overcome this business dynamism, companies require certain predictability mechanisms which can guard them against the unanticipated threats or overlooked business opportunities. The solution lies in environmental scanning which refers to the process of monitoring and evaluating the business environment. It helps in adjusting the business tactics in case of a change in the business environment. The present research is focused on evaluating the impact of the macro business environment on the small manufacturing businesses in India. The scope of the research has been narrowed to include only the macro environmental forces because the macro forces are not company specific thus it allows the findings of the research to be generalized. Additionally, the macro forces have a wide scope and tend to influence the micro environment of the business, therefore, it seems advisable to focus the research on the role of macro environmental forces to reduce the accumulation of irrelevant data. The first sentence is awkward, due to the lack of an article in front of "business environment" and the inherent awkwardness of "comprises of." Otherwise, your grammar is quite good. TarunPathak: To overcome this business dynamism This makes no sense. Dynamism is a fact. It cannot be overcome.
