Nil Sine Magno Labore, also known as Nothing Without Great effort it is one of the most inspirational lines I have ever heard. As time has passed and I have grown up, I have realized a lot in my life, that nothing without great effort is accomplished. As a child, I did not realize what it takes in life to succeed, thinking that there is always a "shortcut" for everything. Based on my personal experiences I have apprehended that nothing is easy and it does indeed need effort to succeed. One of my experiences that can relate to this account was when I joined karate. I was young but just from this sport I was awakened to reality and grasped what was ahead in my life.

I was 13 years old, when I first walked into the building. I had a white belt tied around my waist and I was ready. I took my socks and shoes off and my bare feet touched the cold mat. I was now a student of discipline and ready to prevail from everybody else. From that moment, my goal was to leave here a black belt. Every couple of months, my belt changed through sweat and hard work, but to me it was worth it. One summer I went to Greece on vacation and quit karate. Fall approached and it was time to get back on schedule. The problem was I didn't want to continue. I got lazy and refused to go back. I was currently a red black belt, only 1 belt away from becoming a black belt. My parents tried to persuade me to continue but I declined.

Winter came about and realized that I put so much effort and time into karate, so why should I give up now? Did I think if I sat home and did nothing that my black belt would just appear in my hands? I knew that was my goal and I shouldn't let any obstacles get in my way. The next day my mother and I went back and signed up. I realized the moment I stepped back in the room, I felt like I belonged there, that I couldn't leave unless I reached my goal. I worked hard, practiced for hours on my own and eventually took my test that June. I passed. At that moment, I never felt so proud of myself to accomplish something in my life before.

That moment has been so far the happiest I have ever been, not only because I got my black belt, but because I didn't give up. I pushed myself, and even when I fell, I helped myself get back up. Nothing in life is easy. We will all encounter complications in our life, whether we feel lazy or go through tough times, we can pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and flourish. Great effort in anything is the key to success. Nil Sine Magno Labore will forever be my motto and my motivation.
