However, Canada's attempt to amend the constitution was a failure. Many citizens felt that population growth was an important aspect among regions in Canada. An agreement between the United States and Canada was made to lower tariffs on products. In result, the treaty did not end up as an advantage for Canada in population growth and other significant aspects. Canada experienced one of the worst recession ever during these times. The 1980s was a difficult decade for Canadians for the following reasons: the disagreements on the Meech Lake Accord, the debates on the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the economic downturn.
