Can't edit any part of the common application, although I haven't submitted it yet. Why?

I just submitted my common application for my first college and now when I go to my other colleges to finish those, it will not let me edit any part of the common application, although I haven't submitted those particular applications yet. Does anyone know why this is???

I guess what I'm asking is, when I submit my Common App alone, does that mean I can't edit it for any of the other schools??

yeah, that's how the system works. you have to submit the same thing for each college. but i've heard there's a way around it if you replicate your application. you can edit and change any parts before submitting it to your final colleges.

Yeah there's a way to make alternate versions. You have to have submitted it to at least one college. Then you go to the instructions and look up what they have for alternate versions. There are can fidn the rest of the steps and the link to go to make another version of your application. Good luck!

That's for sure. You can't change anything once you have submit the commonapp for any colleges. However, you do can change the things you wrote in the supplements. (Honestly, I had made a same mistake as you last year.)

You should really read the intructions and the words in the application carefully, especially when you are about to submit it.

Another word of advice, print the copy or save the application when you submit it, cause you might need it later.

Yes, I saved every document that I submitted & thanks, I just looked at the alternate version. Now that I think about it though, I'm not really sure if I need to change anything.

While I'm at it though,

Do any of you know when the last date to take a subject test is? I'm taking the reg. SAT again this January and I'm not sure if I'll be able to take the SAT II.

Also, when do my teacher evaluations need to be turned in? Hopefully not on the same date as the application...

indeed
It says it right there. If you already submitted a copy, you yourself checked off the box that says:

"I understand that once my application has been submitted it may not be altered in any way; I will need to contact my colleges directly if I wish to provide additional information."

To make an editable copy, click "Common Application" (the gray tab)
then where it says "original" just click replicate. You can make up to ten versions this way.

You should read things more carefully before checking them off in the other versions.

January is usually the last test date a college will accept SAT scores from. It doesn't seem like you'll be able to take the SAT II's

teacher eval.s need to be stamped and mailed by the 15, or so I've heard.

I read it carefully Jonathan, I just was under the impression that it couldn't be altered for that particular school...

nope, you can. I personalized the common app essay with the school name since i'm applying to exactly ten. I thought same thing when i submitted my first; I even asked my guidance counselor, and he told me it only applied to a particular school, so i was just as worried after submitting me first.

You can generally find the answer to any question in the common app FAQ section; that's where i figured this out

Well I doubt you can take anymore SAT II since you'll already be taking the SAT reasoning in Jan and it's usually either that or the Subject test in one day. It depends when the college feels is the last day they want to take SATs. I know some that take the Jan and some that take the Dec. Recommendations usually need to be postmarked before the deadline but I don't know if they'll take it otherwise. Actually concerning recs, I was wondering if anyone knew if the letters had to have return address or something. My teachers sent them weeks ago but at least one of my colleges hasn't gotten them yet and I'm wondering if they were lost or if anything was missing from the envelopes. If anyone knows anything, it would really help.

One more question:

I have submitted two supplements. One is turned green, but the other says that it's still incomplete (although I HAVE submitted it). Is this a problem?

It shouldn't be. Its probably processing. I think once its been successfully sent, the commonapp (or w/e site you're using) will be notified.

Ok... Then another: I've paid the application fee for UVA, but it still isn't showing up on the essay. I have to have that before I can even submit the common app and the due date is January 2 (which I'm HOPING is midnight on Jan. 2?)...

Well, I think there might be some technical problems regarding your application.

However, there is a chance that it's submitted. NYU supplements have red arrows rather than green, and says it was downloaded rather than submitted, and I applied to washington university in st. louis, the supplement was indicated by red rather than green triangle and it says offsite, I presume they mean the same thing since i can't alter it in any way. So, if any of the above happens, it definitely meant it's submitted

and the payment thing: unless you made the payment on the commonapp website, it will have a red triangle for you. my WUSTL pays on their website and they also have red triangle instead of green ones.

Apparently I accidentally paid for UPENN after I decided I wasn't going to apply there. I don't know how to get my money back now, but I know I clicked to pay for UVA...
