Nursing School Application Essay - 'I want to make a difference'

I want to be a nurse because I want to make a difference not only in the lives of the patients that I will care for, but in the lives of their families as well. For the parents whose child is sick, the woman whose husband has been in an accident, the child whose father has just been diagnosed with cancer, I want to make a difference. To me, nursing is more than just medicine. It's care and compassion, hope and support.

When I was younger I had to go through some medical testing, and I remember the nurses being so kind. They would tell me what a tough little girl I was after getting shots, and they made me feel brave. Then later when my dad was diagnosed with cancer I saw firsthand how a great team of nurses can take such a burden off the family. The nurses at the Lipson cancer center were so helpful in answering all my parents questions and giving advice whether it was related to insurance matters or to my dads care. I want to be that person for another family going through what I went through.

I got a taste of this while I worked as a home health aide for two years, and also through volunteering at a hospice home. As an HHA/HCSS I have worked as an in-home caregiver and I have also worked in an assisted living facility. I have also spent time at the Aurora House in Spencerport. I have always known that I want to work with people, but I find purpose in the relief I can bring to the patients I care for and to their families. I have not found a job as rewarding or fulfilling as being a caregiver.

If accepted into the program I plan to receive my LPN and continue on to become a registered nurse. I hope to work in pediatrics or oncology.

Hey,

Start your essay may be with some statement -" I believe, if you are not saving a life, you are wasting your living life".

Mention by whom are inspired?
can mention some problem that you would have encounter or heard - in dearth of nurse - that will show how determine you are.
What contribution you can make in society or community or circle by learning nursing.

To me, nursing is more than just medicine. It's care and compassion, hope and support.

I think this can be a better hook for your essay. I mean you can start with this point and then go on to explain how you perceive nursing and what you intend to do with that profession. That seems to be a better logical arrangement.

When I was younger I had to go through some medical testing, and I remember the nurses being so kind. They would tell me what a tough little girl I was after getting shots, and they made me feel brave.

It's nicer and more emotional had you isolated a particular incident and a nurse/ nurses here. Give more focus to a particular event.
