College Essay: UT Austin 2nd draft
Prompt: Considering your lifetime goals, discuss how your current and future academic and extra-curricular activities might help you achieve your goals.

Danced Away

The sweat trickled down my cheek and I could hear the heavy breath next to me, while people passing by were looking at us as if our behavior was unacceptable and tried to avoid our glance. We are used to this type of attitude because it's unusual when you see a group of kids dancing in the middle of street with the boom box playing loud music. The beauty of dance is that you can express your art anytime, anywhere and only require your body to paint the idea you want. My life time goal is to preserve this art by impacting the community and inspiring the people around me through the median of dance.

I've encountered dance ever since I was young. Growing up in Korean culture, Korean Pop, also known as "Kpop", definitely showed me what dance is like, but it wasn't until high school when I decided to actually get into the culture of dance. This all started because of my small curiosity toward this club called Shepton Break Dance Club. The older kids of the club taught me some basic moves and I instantaneously fell in love with it. It was amazing how I could simply release my anger and sadness through these simple moves and the feeling was great. The curiosity soon changed into passion, and that passion became my love. That just wasn't it; I wanted to share this love with more people so I started persuading my friends to come and learn with me. By the end of the year, I brought five friends who learned to love dance just like me and they became my best friends because of this one common interest called dance. That's when I realized dance is more than just an art; dance is a median for greater things.

My passion for dance continued when I became a junior at Plano West Senior High School. Although junior year is supposed to be the most stressful year, I pursued further into dance than ever before. This is when I first encountered the organization called Dancing For a Cause (DFC). It's an organization with a specific goal of creating a student volunteering body and uniting all individuals through this common interest called dance. That's when I realized I needed to join this organization because DFC wasn't just about dancing. It was about creating bonds, teaching leadership, and impacting and changing the community. Through numerous performances we practiced, and spent so much time together that our bonds only grew stronger and they eventually became my second family. I could call them my brother or sister without any hesitation. This could've never happened without the president and vice president. To them it wasn't just leading the group, but rather knowing how to stimulate passion. They became my inspiration by bringing us together, strengthening our bond, and teaching us life lessons such as responsibility and dedication through the median of dance. I didn't realize how valuable their knowledge was until I became the vice president the following year.

Once I became the vice president, I knew it was now my role to stimulate that passion for dance in newcoming members, plus help organize DFC's annual event called "BreakOut". A dance jam where young dancers compete and showcase their skills to each other, the competition has an age limit of teenagers only; it's one of the most anticipated events of the year among young dancers in the Dallas Metroplis. The best part about this event is that every profit made by this event and by the vendors is donated to St.Jude's Child Research Hospital. Using our median, we were able to donate five thousand dollars this year. After the BreakOut, I realized that I have already impacted the community by helping out organize this event and those five thousand dollars we donated could have helped saved numerous lives so in a way we have changed the society.

Dancing For a Cause and Shepton Break Dance Club had definitely changed me as a person throughout high school. I would have never learned how to inspire and impact the people and the society if I wasn't part of these organizations. As the vice president, I still have another year to look forward to and I am definite that I am going to apply everything I learned from the past, and I still will even after I leave high school and continue my dancing career.

I would definitely welcome any type of criticism!!!
