Uc admission #1 prompt: Computer Science

keithhims 1-2  Nov 2, 09, 12:48am  #
I will always remember when my mom asked me if I had finished my homework and chores every day, even on holidays and I really thank my mother for encouraging me to be responsible in my life. Consequently, the most important quality I've always said to be one of my strongest basis of my life is responsibility. For me, this quality is very important in life; since without it; chores works and projects would never be achieved. Being responsible is doing the right thing at the right time. Furthermore, I've always tried to apply it in every aspect of my life. In addition, I've being encouraging other people to try and to practice it everywhere they can. The places where you can specially see most of my commitments are at school and in my day to day basis. Being responsible requires been committed and taking into account every action one does.
Thoroughly, school is one of the places where you can see my commitment of being responsible. I tend to be on my projects and doing them on time. As I've always told myself "Don't leave the things you can do today for tomorrow." Moreover, when projects are in groups I tend to encourage other people to be responsible and to put into action the most important "team work". At school, people thought I was crazy, because every time I got home from school I started to do my homework. My mother always said to take a rest first and then do the homework; however I've always liked doing homework right after getting home from school or college because it makes me feel less preoccupied of my chores. Being responsible and doing the projects on time gives me a satisfaction of not only for the grade, but also for the knowledge and wisdom gained from putting my learned abilities into action.
In addition, being responsible is not only doing chores or work, but also doing the right thing at the right time. What is doing the right thing? Doing the right thing is taking the correct decision at any time. Being responsible for every action is the most important thing I've encouraged myself to do, under any circumstances. For example, when I used to work in my parents shop, every time I made a mistake I always took responsibility of it. This not only made me practice responsibility, but also made me a better person since I learned from the mistakes I made. Also, it shows character and makes a person trustworthy, since he or she will not need the supervision of another to do his or her own work. As John Baptiste Moliére quotes "It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do."As in our daily basis we must be responsible for every action we do.
Finally, practicing responsibility is one of the most basic steps I've considered practicing throughout my life. No matter where I am, I will always keep practicing responsibility even in school or in my daily life basis. Since, responsibility benefits a person with other good qualities such as making one look trustworthy. No matter if we are at school or at work, people like working with school mates or coworkers who are responsible in their lives, that's why I will always keep practicing responsibility and encouraging everyone to practice it.

First off, you want to show the person reading your essay that you are responsible, not tell them. Right now, your essay comes across as "Mommy tells me to be responsible. I do what she says. Thus, I am responsible". You essentially wrote what you think responsibility is, instances where responsibility is a positive quality, and stated that you were responsible.
Your essay is where you can shine; telling the college that you do your chores and homework doesn't really separate you from the crowd, or even tell them much about who you are. What I suggest you do is brainstorm some situations in which your mom exemplified this quality, some where you did the same, then try to incorporate them into your essay.
Above all else, avoid describing yourself as a responsible person. Doing so only creates an abstract of who you are, which you want to avoid at all costs. Show them what you've got.

Great job. In the first paragraph, you sound like all work and no creativity. You should mention how being responsible can make life meaningful. Gibran writes that we are alive in action and we die when we are idle.

I will always remember when my mom asked me if I had finished my homework and chores every day, even on holidays, and I really thank my mother for encouraging me to be responsible in my life. ------> This sounds like ordinary mom stuff. Got any better examples? Examples of her finding creative ways to instill responsibility? Did she provide opportunities to feel satisfaction from self-discipline, for example?
At the end, it would be great to find out you are going into politics or something... I sure would like to be represented by politicians with a strong sense of responsibility!
