Prompt 4: Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?
I was merely a preschooler when I moved from an urban setting to a rural location. I will always remember the first time looking out of my new bedroom window and gazing out at the mountains that towered over everything. It was not long before my family drove down the road to go hiking on those mountains for the first time. As my sister and I grew older, and when we all became a little more adventurous, we went hiking for the first time to High Point.
The six-mile hike up the mountain discourages many from taking this trail. We were all feeling courageous that day and when we began, nothing could have stopped us. We hiked all the normal paths we usually took for around one mile. We then saw the sign that pointed to the trail that leads to High Point. I thought there must have been a mistake because normally the trails are almost wide enough for a car to travel on, but this trail was so narrow we all had to in walk single file. We discovered our first obstacle two miles down the trail. A ten-foot cliff we would all have to climb over. At first, I thought we had reached a dead end and took the wrong path. After standing there puzzled for minutes, we finally climbed over. We were finally relieved after a while to see a trail marking to show us we were still on the right path. We continued hiking for hours. It seemed near impossible that we were ever going to reach our destination. I constantly stumbled and tripped over the loose rocks and all I wanted to do was turn back. My legs were tired and about to give in until we all saw a sign of hope. High Point was only a quarter mile away. It was not long until we finally reached High Point.
I stood on the cliff and observed the sight not many are able to see. I saw countless miles of green trees that would normally tower over me. It was hard to believe that I was viewing the entire valley where I have lived for so many years. I felt as if I were on top of the world. We stayed for at least an hour on the cliff taking everything in. This new place that I have only seen for a little while immediately became one of my favorite places in the world for two reasons. The first, more obvious reason was because of how magnificent it was to be able to look out off of a cliff and see so much of the world. The second reason was because of the thrill of accomplishing a seemingly impossible task. When I began, I had no idea what I was up against. I did not know that I was going to have to climb a ten-foot cliff nor did I realize how exhausted my legs were going to be before we even made it there. I conquered each obstacle in my way of reaching my goal now matter how many times I stumbled or wanted to give up and turn around. When I reached my goal, it justified everything that I endured. I often am able to apply this to almost every aspect of life. No matter what task I am up against, or the obstacles I will face while doing this task, reaching my goal will give me a feeling like I am on top of the world.
The hike to High Point has become one of my favorite places in world. With each step I take hiking the path, I recall the overwhelming feelings of accomplishing a near impossible goal. Every time I face a task that I believe to be impossible, I think about the first time I ever hiked to High Point.
