What music, art, science, mathematics or literature has challenged, surprised, or unsettled you and in what way.

Ready to Die is a very thought provoking song created by the notorious B.I.G (biggie smallz), for why would anyone say that they are ready to die. However the more I thought about it I realized that this song relates to my life. It challenged my thinking in more ways than one, for why would anyone want to speak their own death into the atmosphere. The answer to my question was right in front of me. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this song relates to my life. In this song it talks about how he was ready to kill himself over all the horrible obstacles, and malicious things he had done in his life. However, at the age of twelve, when I was living with my abusive parents I pondered the same thoughts. The negative things that befell me made me want to seek out thoughts of suicide. Fortunately, my new parents taught me to never speak anything negative into the atmosphere. When I learned how Biggie Smalls died, I pushed all those thoughts of suicide out of my head and became a more positive person. I became determined to not let my situation get the best of me. I learned to survive my difficult hardships Moreover, instead of being ready to die, I am ready to achieve my dreams of attending the University of Virginia, because I am ready to live.

Daja, this is a very straightforward answer the an essay prompt that does not really tell us much about how and why you identify with the song. What I am trying to tell you, is that it would be best if you first offered a glimpse into your background as a person up to the point in your life when you heard this song. Then you can go on to explain how it changed your life and we, as the readers of this essay, will have a better idea as to why you are responding to the song in that manner. For example, you speak of new parents in your essay. Now we have no idea why you have new parents and how that might have influenced your feelings about the song. So letting us in in how you lost your original parents might help us better understand where your responses are coming from.

Hey, I'm no college admissions counselor, but I think this is a super cool/unique topic. I wrote this exact UVA essay about Kendrick Lamar's good Kid maad City. You can definitely switch up the organization so it flows more logically like a story about your life...Specifically you say "In this song it talks about how he was ready to kill himself over all the horrible obstacles, and malicious things he had done in his life." I suggest maybe instead include a quote from the song instead and then explain how that quote really reminded you of your life circumstances. "Moreover, instead of being ready to die, I am ready to achieve my dreams of attending the University of Virginia, because I am ready to live." This sentence right here seems really forced. I don't think this prompt is looking for a connection to UVA. You'll be fine if you prove that Ready to Die had an impact on your life. Good luck!
