Radio and TV program at Ryerson essay

Hello everybody,
I just finished writing the essay I will submit for admision to Ryerson's Radio and TV program.

I have never had to write an essay before in my life, so I would really appreciate it if you could offer some feedback.
The essay is due on tuesday. Thanks in advance.

The requirements are as follows:

* Tell us why you are an excellent candidate for the Radio & Television program. Within your essay, include any criteria that you decide is relevant, however, the essay should also include responses to the following questions:

a) 5 years after graduating from the RTA (Radio & Television) program, what type of career do you see yourself in and why? How would you and the RTA program benefit from your participation.

b) What work have you done inside or outside of schol that makes you stand out as a candidate?

c) Production work in the RTA program along with the industry also involves group work. Give an example of a time when you had to work with others. What was your role? What issues arose and how were they addressed?

d) Of the courses of study available within the RTA program, which are you most interested in and why? How would the non-media related courses you complete benefit you? Make reference to specific courses.

I have always been fascinated by the plurality of things and how, once you manage to fully understand each of the parts, those things, that at first seemed so different or even opposites, suddenly become one, they complement each other and together they create something bigger; something better.

My name is ******* *****; I am 28 years old and, as you're about to learn, my life has been challenging at times but bever boring.

I attended university for the first time when I was 18 years old. Back then I chose a career as an engineer for several reasons: my dad is and engineer and my mom a mathematician, I actually enjoyed math and physics unlike most of my classmates and I have always been genuinely interested in understanding how things work.

I was always deconstructing things just to put them back together; I did it to toys, small kitchen tools and I even opened the back of an old TV once to figure out where the images came from.

What I failed to recognize back then was that I wasn't really looking to understand how to construct things, what I was really looking to understand was the interrelationship between the parts because of the emotion the whole had created in me on the first place. So, after completing 2 years as an engineer I started feeling like there was something missing in my life, I dropped out of school and decided to go to travelling on my own.

My trip through Spain, Greece, Italy, and Ireland provided me with the opportunity to better understand the world and myself; an opportunity I would have never got had I stayed in Mexico during those very important years of my life.

For the first time I was able to see how different things can be from country to country; the clothes, the food, the architecture... the behaviors and beliefs.

Being surrounded by all that diversity was fascinating to me, but even more fascinating was the fact that no matter where I was, there was always a radio station playing the music I grew up with. Same for the TV; I was very surprised to realize there were some TV shows that broke all country barriers and were shown on both continents.

I became very interested in knowing what it took to create something that people from all over the world, with different backgrounds and life experiences, could enjoy, so I started working for a small music school in Barcelona as a promoter in order to get free music lessons in exchange.

By the time the end of my trip came I was so interested in learning more about the entire process of creating music that I applied to a music school in the U.S. and a couple months later, I was on my my way to California where once again I found myself completely immersed in a different culture.

At school in Pasadena, a small city in Los Angeles County, I got to learn a lot more about music and the recording process, a lot of the teachers there work in the industry so I was able to get many invaluable lessons but the biggest one for me was how to work as part of a team.

At the end of every quarter we had to do a performance in front of the school. The first quarter performance required me to be the lead singer of a group of 5 people; every singer in my class had to do the same and we only had 3 weeks to prepare. On top of that, the songs we were assigned to work with were pretty basic and needed to be modified in order to be unique.

We were all very nervous. How were we supposed to prepare our own songs while at the same time having to learn backup vocals for 4 more songs in such a short time!??

The first time my group and I got together was a complete disaster. We were working on my song and I noticed everyone felt as if they were wasting time they could use to work on their own songs; we weren't really working together or getting anything accomplished and we were all very frustrated.

The next day at school I proposed that next time we got together we worked on all 5 songs allocating a certain amount of time to each of them, that way we would all get to work on both parts of our assignments -modify our songs and learn backup vocals for the rest of them- all on the same day. Everyone agreed and from then on homework became fun, ideas started pouring in and whenever an idea didn't fit the song we were working on we would put it aside and use it at a later time on a song we thought it fitted better. We became very excited to work on everyone else's song because it felt as if every single one of them was our own and suddenly it was all about sharing ideas to create something new.

That experience taught me not only how to work as part of a team, but more importantly, the benefits of doing so - I got to enjoy the creative process as well as the finished product.

After a year in California I moved to Winnipeg with a friend from school to keep working on our musical venture. A couple of years went by before I finally decided to start taking acting lessons as a way to meet people and to network, that's when a new world opened up for me and I immediately knew I had finally found what I was looking for.

Within a year of acting I managed to participate in theater plays, short films and commercials.
I also had the opportunity to experience life on set as a "stand in" and background performer for a couple of Hollywood movies, one of which I was later surprised to attend the premier at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival as a perk for volunteering in the Sales and Industry Department.

After doing extensive research into the different career paths in the entertainment business, I finally found the one that will allow me to share my passion for understanding the emotional impact music, TV shows and films have on audiences, by means of analyzing the relationship between all of the parts involved in creating it.

I wish to become a Development Executive and I believe the Radio and Television program at Ryerson University can help me build a strong foundation.

5 years after graduating I see myself making the rounds between the different areas of development at a TV production company in order to further develop the skills to identify a good idea and learning more about what network executives are looking to hear from a pitch and see on a pilot.

From the courses of study available to me within the Radio and TV program two of the ones I am most interested in are The Nature of Narrative and Information Gathering & Research Methods.

The Nature of Narrative course will provide me the knowledge needed to discern between well written and poor written material as well as making me able to successfully analyze and understand the international market and the changing audience tastes when applied to case studies, previously obtained through the implementation of the Information Gathering & Research Methods learned at school.

From the non-media related courses offered I am particularly attracted to Entrepreneurial Behavior & Strategy as well as Identifying Opportunities as I believe both courses will teach me how to build the best strategy to align with my business's core competencies and, in turn, create a competitive edge for the company I'm associated with.

On a smaller scale, I will be able to apply that same knowledge on a personal level to know when and how to make the appropriate career moves.

Why am I an excellent candidate for the program you ask? I believe one of the things that make me stand out as a candidate is that I have real life experience.

It was through real life experience that I was able to not only gain valuable information in some areas of the business, but more importantly, I got to know myself.

After having been to 9 different cities in three different continents I now know I can easily adapt to different cultures; I also know that I thrive on challenge and change and that I am passionate about understanding people and communicating ideas.

It is because of past experiences that I can now see many different parts of the "whole" that I am and I hope Ryerson becomes the school where I get to learn about a side of myself that I am yet to see.

I always fascinated by the plurality of things and process of their composition.How are so different or even opposites things after combining look one thing,bigger,better and attractive.

...whenever an idea didn't fit the song we were working on , we would put it aside and use it at a later time on a song we thought it fitted better.
