The Intellectuals

Who is accountable for losing our intellectuals out to the streets? We know there are many intellectuals out there, but it is the job of the schools and educators to fish them out and divert it into the academicals world, which would be more productive. Most educators and institutions are responsible for losing intellectuals to the streets.

Most educators are unaware of their basic academic responsibilities. In some schools in the United States, a reasonable amount of teachers do not grant the students opportunities to exchange ideas and opinions, but rather they imply their own ideas and set it as a rule in the class. Some teachers forget that one of their basic responsibilities is to abstract these ideas from the students and put them into academic study. I remember in one of my sociology classes, the instructor hardly listened to our own point of views on topics, he just read the text book and explained what was in the book, he never asked for opinions or what we felt about certain topics. We all know that art classes, especially classes

like sociology, are interesting classes where students come up with different experiences in life and how some certain topics relate to them. After a few weeks of a boring class, half of the students dropped, the other few maybe failed the class or came out with no new ideas. I just couldn't see myself in a class that dull. Classes are meant to be lively and interactive not slow and sluggish. A quote from one of the speeches of a member of the American Council of Educations explains how "colleges and universities should welcome intellectual pluralism and free exchange of ideas" which is one of the basic academic responsibilities of the educator. If some instructors understand the fact that they themselves are not only teaching but learning new skills, lectures would be more interesting and will attract more intellectuals because they know they have something to share with their fellow students and instructor.

Many intellectuals express interest at going to college and furthering their education, but the particular goal is out of their reach. College tuition has been increasing yearly. My last year of high school was exciting, everyone was preparing to get into college, except for few of my friends who weren't able to get into college due to the high rate of tuition and limited scholarships, to my friends it was like a dream that never came true. They finally ended up staying at home, wasting their skills and ideas which could have been channeled into good academic work. This was very sad, if only the college would have provided some aid which could have helped them .Schools should focus on working with the government on fund issues and how to raise more money for its citizens to get a good education. This will help a lot of intellectuals out on the street who were deprived of their education.

The government needs to concentrate more on the construction and designing of our colleges. Schools should be made to look attractive. Being attractive deals with the building construction, facilities and being well equipped. When a school is well equipped it shows a sign of success. This means that the school should have enough parking spaces for students and teachers. An article on daily new dailynews.co.tz/editorial, strongly supports this topic "schools should have what it takes get their students involved in academics - serene school compounds, good water and electricity supply, well-stocked libraries, well-equipped laboratories, sports facilities, spacious classrooms, good accommodation, good meals and easy access to such essential services as health". Conducive environments would definitely attract all kinds of intellectuals, both the street smarts that love sports, fashion, music and book smarts. Colleges should use this means of beauty to get the street smarts more involved in school.

This issue is based on the fact that most of our street smart's talents and ideas are left to route in the streets while the attention and focus is on the book smarts. I think this is an issue that should be looked into as soon as possible.

Most educators and institutions are responsible for losing intellectuals to the streets.

You can't make a generalization about most educators and most institutions... maybe you can write, "Too often, intellectuals are lost to the ..."

I remember in one of my sociology classes in which the instructor hardly listened to our own points of view on topics, and he just read the text book and explained what was in the book, he never asking for opinions or what we felt about certain topics.

We all know that art classes, especially classes like sociology---- sociology is not an art class. This sentence makes it sound like you think it is an art class.

... are interesting classes where students come up with different experiences in life and discuss how some certain topics relate to them. After a few weeks of a boring class, half of the students dropped, and the other few maybe failed the class or came out with no new ideas.

The government The decision-makers at academic institutions need to c oncentrate more on ...

You should go back and divide that long first paragraph into two paragraphs. That long first para seems to go on forever.

:-)
