This is my first draft, so it might not be perfect at all...
What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field - such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities - and what you have gained from your involvement.
One of my vivid childhood memories is when I was so happy walking to any language classrooms no matter what language it is. As a little girl, I did not have to control myself to concentrate in those classes, but the language itself has a power to keep all my attention. One day in my primary school year in Thailand, my English teacher asked if any students could explain how two sentences are different. I remembered the sentences very well. The sentences were "She loves an apple" and "She loves the apple". At the time, nobody could answer but me. The moment gained me more confidence and aroused me the desire of exploring more about language. It made me proud of myself even though I realized how simple the question was as I have grown up. From then I decided to put language as my favorite and passion of life, as well as I realized how much language is interesting and appealing to me. The more I learn about language, the more fascinated I am.
Since my father is a flight attendance of Thai airways international, I have had some chances to follow him to the countries he went to on his duties. By the age of fifteen, I traveled to Spain with my dad, and the most challenge part for me was walking alone at the airport after the plane was landed. Because my first language is Thai and second language is English, I was a bit nervous and excited to communicate with the immigration officer. I was afraid whether he will understand what I wanted to convey or not. Nevertheless, I did it. At that moment, I tried to speak English slowly, and pronounced as clearly as I could. I knew that the officer did not get me in every single word, but my sentences would make some senses to him at least. Still, it was the impulsion that pushed me to learn more about language and different languages across the world. As I have grown up, I have more chances traveling with my dad to different countries. I heard people talk in many languages, and I perceived the diversity of language which I never find the key to classify the differences or similarities among them. I also discovered how language has a charm itself. Therefore, studying linguistics will respond the curiosity of language and allow me to be more who I am.
Up to now, being an international student at Santa Monica College allows me to interact with different people from many countries. I got to learn some simple sentences and words of different languages from my friends. As I have learned more and more about language, I realized how language is important for our lives. For me, it is not only a series of different languages from different countries, but it is also included many aspects of language such as how language affects people or how people use language to interact with others. I usually have a question about language pop up into my mind, yet I never get the right answer for it. Sitting in class as a beginner student, I found out that Korean has different grammar which reversed most of the word orders in sentence from English. The basic sentence of Korean could start with anything but has to end with verb. Therefore, with this different point of two languages, I wonder how the word has many languages, and in what extent people could learn and understand languages from different structures in the same meaning. Language is a mystery for me, and I would like to find the key and expose it.
From now on, I am looking forward to study and explore more and more about language toward the University. I am positive that the University of California system will satisfy my obsession and take me deeper into the world of linguistics.
