Essay topic: A person who has had a significant influence on me

My Grandpa

From the time I was young, my grandpa has always been greatly involved in my life. He is the kind of grandparent every kid wants to have. When I was young, if I needed a playmate he was willing to stoop to my level to ensure that I enjoyed myself. We would go on endless tractor rides through the fields and garden in the back of his farm, and he would point out the newest additions of growth, which often including colorful, exotic flowers. As I've grown older, he's been a listening ear whenever I needed to talk about anything in life; whether I was encountering difficulty in school, developing a new interest, or just needing guidance he has never been too busy to help me out or to lend me his advice. He has continuously been so interested in everything I have undertaken, and has constantly encouraged me with everything I have developed a fascination in.

In the past year and a half my grandpa has developed a few health conditions, his heart has become weaker over the years like his father's was, and as a result he is no longer as active as he once was. He becomes extremely dizzy if he bends down, and he is barely strong enough to start his tractor. He uses a cane, and can't walk far or he will become too exhausted. Menial upkeep around the house is an undertaking in itself. On top of all this hardship, he is constantly told by the medical personnel who attend him that his condition is unpredictable and that there are many details unknown about it. He lives through each day with a list of what he is no longer able to do, and knows that if something happens, the doctors may not know what to do.

Recently my grandpa went to the hospital for a checkup. He ended up passing multiple tests, most of which the doctors had not expected. Not too long after he went again for some work on his defibrillator. It was challenging for him because he knew there are always possible risks. He was brave through the whole surgery though, and passed all the tests for any further issues. He has been out in his garden every day since then at the doctors' consent, showing that he has what it takes to overcome obstacles. He is gaining his strength back, slowly but surely, and I have done my best to encourage him along the way.

What a sweet tribute to your grandfather, I hope he sees this! Good luck with school and have fun!
