Given the statement above, how do you think you could enrich our diverse and inclusive community, and what are your hopes for your college experience?
Unlike many people think, diversity is not only race, ethnicity and gender. Everyone is unique in some way; no two people are the same. You don't have to have some amazing unique quality to enrich a diverse community. For, me, diversity is one of the most important aspects of the personal growth. It expands your worldliness, enhances your social development, makes you sensitive to human differences, allows you to view issues from multiple perspectives, among many others reasons.
I always tried to know a maximum of different kind of people as I could. By different, I mean people who lived other experiences than me, whether outside my country or in my city. I had the privilege to visit Switzerland, Chile, Portugal and the USA, and I spent about a month in each one. I tried new food, learned new idioms, learned about a new culture and met new people. It was a awesome experience! When I got back from my last trip ( I spent the last summer in Boston, MA studying English) I decided that was time to know my diverse community. I started as a volunteer at an nonprofit organization, and I learned so much from it. Interact with people who life experiences differ sharply from mine, challenged me to see from different point of view, and, by that, evolve personally.
Exchange knowledge and work with all different kinds of people are two of my goals. I hope that, once I'm in college, I can meet a lot of new people, their life stories and opinions about the world, and share mine. Always with an open mind and a positive posture, I hope to deepen my understanding of the world around me through both my academic studies and in my everyday interactions with other people.
I'm from Brazil, a country which diversity is the main feature of our people, and I hope to bring this to the campus and enrich my university experience.
