Note: I'm attempting to transfer to a nursing school
Disappointment with an initial dream school, a dreary social life, homesickness, and overpriced colleges are all reasons students transfer schools- but not me. I was accepted into my top-choice college during the winter of my senior year of high school, and it lived up to and exceeded my expectations. The campus is flawlessly beautiful. I played on the women's varsity soccer team, where we landed in the conference championship after I scored the game winning goal in front of a packed home crowd. Classes challenge me as never before, my friends are the truest I have ever had, and the price is a fraction compared to most private institutions. Yet, I can't wait to leave.
My current college, in spite of its greatness, does not offer a nursing degree, which is my dream career. This contradiction of interest and my willingness to leave such a fulfilling community can only be a testament to how committed and confident I am that I belong in the nursing field.
Healthcare is in my blood. My dad is a family practitioner in our hometown. Growing up with a small town doctor as my dad brought the tireless question from adults of whether or not I would follow in my father's footsteps and pursue a career in healthcare. My youthful answer for years was the same- "of course not." I had seen firsthand the challenges that are intrinsic to caring for sick and suffering people. Providing for the weak members of society was hardly a glamorous position. I had seen my dad endure adult tantrums after he refused to prescribe excess drugs, spend countless hours buried under paperwork, and sustain long, unpaid hours of quietly listening to patients venting their complaints.
It is easy to imagine my disappointment then when, after working at his office for two years alongside his staff, I realized my passion for nursing. Despite the challenges inherent to caring for people, caring for people became the only worthwhile lifestyle I could imagine. The time investment and sacrifice of nurses, doctors, and office staff had helped to heal life-altering wounds and enhance lives. What could be more a more honorable goal than to spend my life attempting to improve and even save lives? Whether I receive awards or never receive a word of thanks for nursing services, the chance to serve others while using the gifts and interests that are unique to me, is an opportunity I would not dare overlook.
