Challenge a Belief (suicidal friend) - College Essay

The topic is: Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

I'm having a lot of trouble focusing on how this affected MY life rather than just story telling.
I am trying to stress the fact that friendship has always been the most important thing to me, but when my friend became suicidal, I had to "betray" that friendship and get her the help that she needed.

Please let me know what else to add/change. Also, if you know any good opening essay quote about friendship that could work..

(QUOTE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP) Growing up in a large, Catholic family, integrity was infused into my life. By forming a strong foundation in this trait, I cultured the belief that sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the people you love.

By being placed in a situation that questioned my character, I was faced with the opportunity to live out my belief of making a sacrifice for someone I love, resulting in the loss of a friendship, or the loss of the greater good.

My school instills the values of honor, dependability, and character. Entering Ursuline Academy at the young age of fourteen, I was thrilled for the opportunity to adopt these beliefs into my daily life.

I immediately bonded with one girl, Kate, and our friendship lasted up until junior year when I discovered that my relationship with Kate put my beliefs that I significantly valued at risk. Not only did Kate suffer from depression, but she also became attached to drugs and alcohol, and even turned to self-harm.

At this point, I knew I needed to distance myself from Kate, but she approached me with the ultimatum that if I end our friendship, she would end her life. The values that Kate had newly found a liking to represented everything that I steered far from. I refused to continue to let her drive her life into the ground, at least not under my watch.

Then, one night, Kate called me and asked if we could talk because she had an emergency. Remembering that friendship is always the most important thing, I agreed and she came to pick me up. We were driving to a restaurant, and it became apparent to me that Kate was not in the right state of mind. I asked her to take me home, and she refused, and then began to drive insanely recklessly and then swerved into the wall.

I was left with two options: to help her turn her life around for the better, or to ignore the problems for selfish desires to keep my best friend. I realized I had no other option than to tell someone, and get her help. So, I scheduled a meeting with Kate's mother and the Dean of Students. The following week, Kate was sent away to rehab.

In this instance, I became aware that I needed to be loyal. But defying my previous beliefs that friendship comes before all, this situation required me to be loyal to the greater good, rather than loyal to my friend.

As the saying goes, you truly do learn everything you need to know in life in kindergarten. Even though friendship has always been such an important part of my life, integrity persevered and made me do the right thing, and help her well-being. I was forced to ruin my friendship with Kate, and in her mind, betray her, to help her achieve the help that she needed. This will forever be the hardest decision I have ever had to make, but I in no way regret it.

Hi I think it is best if you explain more the imact your decision did for her and than give more words to explain her suicidal tendencies.

College would want to see with anecdotal evidences how Kate changed for the better. Noentheless this is a good essay ! Keep working on refining this.

Bhatz, I would start off the essay by presenting a friendship quote along the lines of "Friends don't betray friends" or "Friends don't throw friends under the bus". A quick Google search for friendship quotes should help you with that. After finding the right quote relating to friendship and betrayal, you can then explain how you were forced to challenge this belief or idea. Present us with an overview of YOUR friendship with Kate. State everything from your point of view and then relate the suicidal tendencies and the actions that you took because you had to challenge the belief or idea set by the quote. By approaching the essay from that standpoint, you will be able to better address the prompt requirements and relate the essay more towards your side of the story rather than hers.
