Hi! In four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, I think speaking is the hardest one. I can self study three others but I need a partner to practice speaking. Furthermore, we don't have much time to think while we are speaking to other one. It's difficult to think both ideas and words to express them ^^ I really want to make friends to help each other.

I'm not a native speaker either. what i use to do is watch movies in english, with subtitles in english so you listen and read in english, also you will be learning how to use words, new words and many other things. for your writting, i would suggest you read books in english, try to read newspapers in english and essays. hope this helps!

well I know this isn't exactly your question but Arabic is my first language. however, as I was learning to speak English at a very young age my English became almost be better but unfortunately my Arabic as a result became worse. So besides taking Arabic classes of course, what I found really helpful is logging onto Google (sign-up for a free account) going to through Google translate and writing in your native language translating in English and you could hear them usually speak it in English and even sometimes, in your native language. I found it to be very helpful learning to write and read Arabic.

I know that learning another language is not easy. I had the same problem, too. Now, I cannot express exactly and fully what I really want to say in English. So I learned one experience, which I'm using. You have to realize that even in your native language; there are a lot of words that you don't know. You have to treat new English words as the way you treat your native language new words. Stop trying to find out what their means in your language. Try to use English to describe vocabularies. That will help you to remember and extend your vocabulary. Then you can go online to read essays, newspapers to improve your reading skill. Watching English Programs on TV helps you improve your listening. If you can read and listen well, it's not difficult for you to write. Remember, vocabulary is the most important when you learn English. You don't have to struggle practicing your English without a dictionary.

@ Trang: I can tell that you are Vietnamese. Nice to meet you. I don't have a paltalk account. Do you want to chat on another messenger?

Hi there,
How are you ? ... if you want to improve your writing skills you have to increase your vocabulary ( without words you have nothing to work with ) , and you have to study grammar so that you will be able to build right sentences , then you have to practice every day . Write in English everyday , just simple sentences .. after that try to write about specific topics , start with easy topics like introducing your self , talk about your school, describe people , places , your hometown ,..etc .

Also text chat will help you . Above all this you need to set your time ( don't spend much time chatting , just 1 hour is enough I think ) .Let me tell you about increasing your vocabulary , the best way is by reading .. there are many ways to do that , you can read short story ( don't be shy to read kid's stories sometimes it help ) or you can search about the topic you want to write about then take notes , write the new vocabulary , and study it .. after that try to write by your self .

Remember : Learning a language needs patience and time .
The more you read ,the better your English will be .
The golden rule is Repeat .. read more than once .
Best Wishes :)

@Hachillies, I've found that paltalk is really fun. You can chat with people around the world on there. I suggest that you should dowload and try using it. However, I agree with Caruso that we shouldn't spent too much time on chatting, it's not very effective. We can relax and learn their accent also. See you

hei Atiya, now, i still learn too but you can use the way i learn english.

Listening : i am listening to english song everyday, if i already hear that song 4 until 5 times, i'll search the lyrics on the internet. it can help you to know how to pronounce it.

Reading : no other way just reading, i started with read a short story or bedtime story in english a simple one, if you already think it's too easy, you can move to novel like harry potter X)

Writing : practice ur writing started to write your diary, it really works!
Speaking : i know you will think i am crazy, but everyday after school, i always stand in front of mirror and starting to tell the mirror about everything happens, i am crying, smiling, laughing. i really do that. and it helps my speaking skill increase.

try it! and keep rocks! :D

@ilove

I, too, have the same experienced. I am afraid to speak English in front of other people, since
I am not a fluent speaker. Also, I am afraid of being laughed and mocked at.

One thing I can't able to grasp English is from British. They talk so fast and so sharp. @___@

Hey, you
Do not have to worry about it. You can spend more time practicing by yourself.
You may do internship as a tour guide or go on study abroad.

@Keng

Thanks for the reply. But I think the best way to learn to speak a language
is by peer-to-peer interaction. Also I am afraid internship and abroad is a bit expensive.

Hi atiya, no need to worry! It's the right start to learn by asking advice from this forum. Key to learn English that is to repeat actions that can develop of your writing, speaking, listening and reading skills.

- Reading
Start by reading some simple story then move into books, essays or simply latest news on the internet. Install an english dictionary extension on your browser, so whenever you find any difficult word you can find out its meaning instantly. By reading you can learn of new vocabulary, grammar and writing structure.

- Writing (I'm bad at this too!)
Your writing skill will improve if you read more. Learn the basic grammar and try create a simple story or a diary by telling your story in one day.

- Listening
Practicing a listening skill by listen to english music, also (this is very helpful) try to listen some podcast! You will learn how to pronounce the word and the more you listen to the podcast your mind will automatically think in english. If you want to learn some british accent, you can try out bbc podcast

- Speaking
You need to find a partner to practice, a native speaker would be the best. I remembered that when I was preparing for my IELTS test, I asked my friend to become my speaking buddy. So after working hours we talked everything in English for an hour. He corrected me right away whenever I made a mistake. As a result, my IELTS score was 7.5!

So keep on learning. You can do it!

@Atiya, sorry to hear about that. I too, i have suffered the same problem before. This was what i did. I started to read more novels and took down notes of words i do not understand. Also, I used the dictionary a lot to get the understanding to the meaning of such words noted. I believe if you try that you will be great.

Try the following things and I hope it will help you:
1- Learn at least 3-5 words with their meaning and usage.
If you think you can forget it, you can write it on a paper and keep that paper with you all time.

2- Read kids English book which are easy to understand. For example, you can understand the English language well of the kid in 6 standard, read that. You will find some or quite good sentences that you did not know before. It will also help you to understand how exactly they were formed. This is how you will also know that how a particular sentence can be spoken in English.

3- Listen radio, watch short stories on youtube or anywhere you can get it and see how they frame sentences. I bet you would learn many new things.

Note: Always write down any new thing that you learn, so that you do not forget it.

4- Write one page everyday. I would suggest you to write anything which is interesting for you.
It will improve your writing skills and reduce spelling mistakes. Sometimes, you also get to know some sentences written in a way you did not know previously.

5- If you don't find someone to speak with in English, speak with yourself, speak in front of a mirror.

6- When you go to sleep, think of what you did today and tell everything to yourself in English and answer all questions comes in your mind in english.

If you stuck with any sentence you are unable to construct, write it down before you fall asleep to make sure you get it done tomorrow.

I hope it will be very helpful to you.
Regards
Tanveer

Hello. I think reading is the best way to help you improve your writing. Read children stories, read short articles, news, posts, and then try to copy and develop. Writing diaries is very very helpful. "Ladybird" stories helped me a lot. Wish you the best of luck ..

Maybe you should learn English like how you learn your native language?
The key of learning another language is preserverance. You have to interact with it everyday: doing English test, listening to children songs, watching cartoons,.... Moreover, you need to build yourself a solid foundation (tenses, pronunciations, vocabularies,....).

The key of mastering it is even more preserverance. You should try writting prompts, translating, discussing, joining social groups and platforms mostly use English, reading literature works and analyzing them.

Hope you will success. Best regards.

You should focus on the parts of the language that you do understand and try to remember how did you learn those, try to improve on them further and use the same strategy to tackle this hurdle as well. Building a positive attitude is key while learning a new skill. You also need positive reinforcement.

Specifically for writing composition you will first need to read/ listen to articles in English:
1. see documentaries about something you already know in English.
2. try to read articles about topics that interest you in English.

See how much are you able to grasp and note down the progress.

An activity you can do try and translate short composition in your native language to English, and then try and improve upon it. For starters, use only words that you know and steadily improve by seeking alternatives.

Hi @atiya , I faced the same matter as well before. But I could give some tips. For me, for writing skills, we must challenge ourselves to read as much as we can, make it a habit. For listening skills, I think it's better to listen some podcast or story-tale or maybe watching movies. For speaking, find a friend from English county would be the best option. I have a friend from UK and it's really help me to improve my English. Hope it works for you as well.

Hi Atiya, I think that you should study English in an extra class, especially having a tutor because he/she will help you focus more on some tasks which you have difficulty in. I hope this suggestion is beneficial to you and please do not put too much pressure on you.

Hi Atiya, I used to struggle to write my essays, so I understand your feeling. There are some methods I have adapted so far to improve my writing skills.

1. I suggest you writing diary or making bullet journal in English everyday. I have started to write diary since I was at the age of 10. It quite useful as I do not need to care about grammar or vocabulary. Another reason why I choose writing diary is because it helps me burn off stress and only me can read my diary.

2. If you can not write your own compositions, I guess one of the reasons is you have difficulties with grammar and vocabulary. I think, you should learn the basic grammar on the internet first, practice writing single sentences, complex sentences,...until there is no mistake in your sentences. Then, you should try to write paragraphs and finally the whole essay. You can expand your vocabulary after these simple steps.

3. Finally, as people have said in the previous comments, reading is the best methods. Through reading, I can immerse in English and learn a great deal of new words. Suggestion: "Harry Potter", but if you want easier one: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid".

Hope that this comment is helpful for you.

Having read some of your newer essay work, I can safely say that you are on the road to becoming an improved English writer. There are still problems with your word usage but you have actually become better at expressing yourself through writing. What you need to develop, is your understanding of English words as it applies to your local vocabulary. There are ways of doing that.

One of the most effective ways to develop your writing skill is by translating essays, articles, printed news reports, even passages or pages from your favorite locally published books or comics. By translating text, you will find yourself memorizing the correct use of English words, developing your vocabulary in the process. It will also add to your knowledge as you begin to learn more about the world around you or things of specific interest to you.

In addition to the translation to of text to English, you can also have someone, such as your English tutor, or any relative or friend who is proficient in English, check your work. They can help you with the proper translation of wrong sections or explain to you the meaning of certain words. This type of grammar checking cannot be done in the classroom or by an online AI since it requires a more intricate explanation process for you to understand where your mistakes were and why it is a mistake.

I know of some English writing learners who were helped by starting their own travel or hobby Vlogs on YT. By writing the CC in English, or using the bundled translator, they also learn how to properly write various types of English sentences. It is not perfect, but it helps them learn about proper English sentence structure just the same.

If all else fails, then hire a writing tutor to help you develop your own writing style and vocabulary. Do not rely on AI like ChatGPT for that because it will not teach you how to write. Those AI are only for proficient English language users / writers/ speakers.

In my opinion, if you lack in writing composition, you can practice it with writing short essay, you can write what do you do in a day etc.. Other than that, you need to do lots of reading and capture new vocab and grammar. You can learn from watching english drama etc..

Could you please elaborate on your question for us to identify what exactly the problem you're facing is and how to cope with it?

Here's my advice about improving writing skills: I assume you'd better take advantage of the vast online materials, such as youtube, articles, newspapers and research to familiarize yourself with academic writing, which is essential in advancing skills.

If you want to learn English, I think you should begin with grammar and vocabulary because vocabulary is a key factor to learn a language successfully. After that, you can watch some videos on Youtube about the topic that you like. You can improve your listening skill when you listen to music and watch videos. Most people believe that speaking is the most difficult skill but I think it is easier than writing.
