How to start Self Introduction in front of several people?

Hi All,

There is one question that is continuously annoying me:

If I have to introduce myself in front of several people; how shall I start?

"I am XYZ and ..." or "My name is XYZ and..."

I have heard from somewhere that it is a wrong practice to start a statement saying "My name is XYZ"...It should always be "I am XYZ"...Please suggest what is the correct usage.

Thanks in advance...

Never given it much thought, really. For formal introductions, I'd probably use the "My name is" construction, personally, but neither is likely to produce a particularly negative reaction from your audience.

Either is fine in a formal setting. Informally, people tend to say "I'm..." rather than "My name is..."

Also take into account your own personality and your listeners, I find a humorous introduction or some sort of tension breaker is always the best. (At least for myself.)
