Persuasive Speech:

From the dawn of time humans have evolved to explore and create new things and have found their identity as being the magnificent master builders of their own destiny. We have been using technology to create weapons of mass destruction that cause devastation for humans destroying human life. It is not only weapons that cause destruction, but with our reliance on technology we are our own weapon of mass destruction.

With our dependence placed on technology we will pay a price. The price will be a dysfunctional society made up of discrimination, imperfection and genetic manipulation.

Throughout time our main goal as a species has been to achieve perfection. To reach it we have come up with the concept of genetically engineering ourselves to make us perfect. But perfection comes at cost, with the cost being who decides that we are perfect? (Something about discrimination)

In the movie Gattaca a less-than-perfect man, conceived naturally, wanted to travel to the stars. Society categorized Vincent Freeman as less than suitable given his genetic make-up due to the risk of heart failure he has become one of the underclass of humans that are only useful for menial jobs. Until Vincent assumes the identity of Jerome Morrow, a perfect genetic specimen who is a paraplegic as a result of a car accident, gives him a chance to achieve his goal.

The Implementation of genetic engineering is designed to be perfect yes, but the morals of it discriminates between two kinds of people allowing it to create a separation between the people who choose not to get genetically reconstructed to the people who are genetically reconstructed. People will be denied equal opportunity which is in violation of their basic human rights that everyone is seen equal. Society would be throwing themselves back into the past were we distinguished by colour but instead it would be by genetics.

Although it sounds appealing to make one's own decision freely, it is actually an impracticable goal as the society has exerted significant influence and restrictions on individuals and has shaped one's value of what they should do and what they should not do. (Something in there) With our choices in life limited, it comes down to a choice freedom or dictation.

In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley written in 1932, the citizens have been manipulated as baby to be conditioned to have certain characteristics. Like Alphas were trained to like books but not nature, there role is to be the leaders of the group. They have been bought up in there society to have specific roles consisting of Alpha's, Betas, Gammas, deltas and Epsilons. Each role has been planned and mapped out according to how they have been conditioned.

This takes away the simple basic human rights we have fought for, for so long. Like freedom of speech and the freedom to think for oneself. As Nelson Mandela once said "To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity." Society's path is determined by the decisions we make and the decisions we should make should reflect upon how we want to build culture, the continued use of technology will be the destruction of civilization and lead us to a dystopia.

Now you may think genetic engineering is years from advancing into our society, but what if I told you it has been around since you were born. Yes, surprisingly you have been consuming it for your whole life. It's called genetically modified food and it comes in the in all different forms. Did you know genetically modified tomatoes came on to the market in 1994 and were the first genetically modified food available to consumers. The genetically modified tomato produces less of the substance that causes tomatoes to rot, so it remains firm and fresh for a longer period of time. This may sound like a positive thing but the potential health risk to us is catastrophic.

Former Scotland Rowett Research Institute researcher and world's leading lectins and plant genetic modification expert, Arpad Pusztai said "he was shocked by his findings. Rats fed GM potatoes had smaller livers, hearts, testicles and brains, damaged immune systems, and showed structural changes in their white blood cells making them more vulnerable to infection and disease compared to other rats fed non-GMO potatoes. "

The risk out way the potential benefits of genetically modified foods if we were to continue expanding and developing this technology, but like most choices in life you have to make a decision if it you want to continue

In conclusion, society's thirst for technology will come at a harsh price as our dependence on it limits use to achieve our full potential. The continued progression of genetic engineering brings forth a society that leads to discrimination, the loss of individuality and a world epidemic of health. If humans don't change their stance on technology we stand no chance of surviving the blast....

Assan, Welcome to EssayForum!!! It's the first time I read your writing, I assume this is your first.
Now, here's my corrections;

- ThroughoutThrough time our main goal as a species has been to achieve perfection.

- Until Vincent assumes the identity of Jerome Morrow, a perfect genetic specimen who is a paraplegic as a result of a car accident, gives him a chance to achieve his goal.

- People will be denied equal opportunity which is ina violation of their basic human rights, that everyone is seen equal.

As you can see, I only saw minor corrections. However, I would suggest that you also consider the following;

- mind your linking verbs

- when delivering your speech, show full conviction, give power to your words and last but definitely not the least, give life to your speech

- proof read and own your speech like it's the air you breathe

I was once part of an organization that teaches or shall I say coaches students for their speech and I think the key that sets our students apart from others, is that, they give their speech a whole new life, the give their heart to it.

Good luck and don't forget to let us know what happens..

Keep writing

Cheers!!!
