Hello,
This is a question that I am faced with for a scholarship application. The topic is as follows:

"Please provide an example of an experience in your life that reflects your sense of humor, your personality, and the type of physician that you hope to become."

I will appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Um, how do you expect us to give you ideas about which of your experiences you should talk about? Give us a draft, or at least a sense of what you plan to talk about, if you want useful feedback.

"Once, I played a practical joke on a sick friend, telling him that I had heard the doctor talking to his parents and that he had only one week left to live. They say humor is the best medicine, but it didn't turn out that way. From that experience, I learned never to make any jokes at all. This shows the serious physician I will be. Indeed, if my patients ever try to joke with me, I will scold them."

You see? We can't help at all without knowing about your personality, sense of humor, and type of physician you hope to become. If you don't feel ready to write a draft of the essay, at least tell us the kinds of things about yourself you might include.

Thanks for the all the replies:

I guess I am just not able to come up with an idea of a experience that reflects my sense of humor and type of physician I like to become. Here are my thoughts though:

I worked as a phlebotomist in a major hospital for one full year and came across many patients of different cultures. I noticed that some patients that found a certain joke funny was offensive to others. From this I can go into saying that I would like to become a culturally competent physician so I can earn the trust and respect of all my patients regardless of their culture. This would ultimately lead to a better patient-doctor relationship and, thus, better care for the patient. Am It thinking this right? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, that's a start. From this, we can learn that you are observant, empathic, and culturally sensitive. We also learn that you have experience in the field. Write it up!
