This is supposed to be a research paper about legalize marijuana
Marijuana, when a person hears this term the first thing that comes into the mind is that it's a drug which is illegal. Many people believe that the only use of marijuana plant is that it can get you high, which isn't true. The Marijuana, cannabis, or hemp plant is one of the oldest psychoactive plants known to humanity. Its history dates back as far as 6000 B.C , when cannabis seeds were used as food in early Chinese traditions. People have used the hemp plant for fabric , ropes and even ethanol fuel. The perception of marijuana in today's society is that marijuana is an illegal drug that leads to increase in crime rate. According to the Whitehouse "Trafficking in illicit drugs tends to be associated with the commission of violent crimes". Many people fail to realize that marijuana has a history of more than 8000 years and it has only been illegal for a short period of time. False myths have discredited marijuana for a long time, marijuana not only provides benefits in the field of medicine but it can also help our economy improve and save billions of tax dollars.
Among many myths, one of the very popular ones is that marijuana damages your brain. Although marijuana stimulates the brain cells "it does not produce toxins that kill them like alcohol, and it does not wear them out as other drugs may" (Levine). Yet many people have believed that marijuana will destroy their brain cells due to the anti drug advertisements and the knowledge of society. Because of the false information passed among society marijuana is considered to be a dangerous and evil symbol in our society.
Another common myth regarded with marijuana is that it is considered to be a gateway drug. This theory states that the use of marijuana will lead to the usage of harder drugs like cocaine and heroin. This statement isn't true because according to Joshua Levine "when the Dutch partially legalized marijuana in the 70's, heroin and cocaine use substantially declined". This fact proves that marijuana is not a gateway drug. According to NIDA, "Marijuana is mostly bought from drug dealers who also sell other drugs so there is more of a risk that a marijuana user will be exposed to and urged to try more drugs." This helps debunk the myth that using marijuana leads to harder drugs.
Marijuana is the most common drug used in the United States. According to Marijuana Addiction Help "nearly 69 million Americans over the age of 12 have tried marijuana at least once and 19 million Americans are regular users of marijuana." According to the Census Department, the population of United States was 297,543,445 in 2009, this means that almost 25% of Americans have tried marijuana at least once in their life.
Because marijuana is used in such high numbers the Federal Government spends billions of dollars each year to decrease the trafficking of marijuana. According to Dr. Miron "Replacing marijuana prohibition with a system of legal regulation would save approximately $7.7 billion in government expenditures on prohibition enforcement". Due to our current economy crisis, the unemployment rate is rising rapidly and more people are claiming welfare and unemployment money from the government. By simply allowing marijuana to be sold in the market, the government can save billions of dollars each year by closing down prohibition enforcement agencies.
Another benefit accrued through marijuana is the significant reduction in crime rates. Marijuana, being illegal, is currently sold on the streets at high prices. Because of such high revenues members of rival gangs often fight for the rights to sell drugs on the street. These fights result in deaths of the gangsters and sometimes of the innocent bystanders. By making marijuana legal there will be more production which will significantly decrease the revenue of drug sales resulting in lower competition for territory.
What about possible tax revenue? The average production cost of marijuana is roughly 33˘ a gram. The average cost per gram of marijuana in United States is roughly $10. This is more than 2500% profit. Such high profits only increase the incentive to grow and sell marijuana. If marijuana was taxed and sold like cigarettes, the tax revenues would add up to billions of dollars each year. This money could be used in other places in the country and this money could be added towards the reduction of poverty in America.
The society, by being close-minded about marijuana is only hurting our economy more. The reason for increase in crime is not because of marijuana, it's because of people like us who are ignorant of the facts and continue to believe the false propaganda spread by anti drug campaigns. It's time for us to open our mind and welcome the pleasure and the riches found by legalizing marijuana.

i did add some of my opinions but i had to put a lot of research info and cite it so some of my own opinions i had to keep out, anyone else got any thoughts on the paper
