Greetings!

If you have a wide range of topics to choose from when writing a research paper, you want to make sure that the subject you finally choose has been written on at length, to make it easier to do your research. The three topics you mentioned all make a good starting place, but I think you may find them too broad to be manageable. You might have to narrow it down a little further, for example, "Use of Intelligence Tests in the Hiring Process" or "Gender Bias in Human Resources Management." Do a few preliminary searches in your school library's database and see what subject provides lots of articles in scholarly journals.

I hope this helps you get started!

Thanks,

Sarah,

I have decided on the topic for the research paper. It is " How does advertising help a business"

I need to write a research paper based on 5 scholarly or peer reviwed articles. Can you please advise as how do I start writing the paper.

Greetings!

Because you must use peer-reviewed articles, your focus will most likely be on studies which have been done. There are likely studies which demonstrate what demonstrable gains can be made in business through use of appropriate types of advertising. You may wish to discuss, first of all, what types of advertising are available, and then how much and in what ways a business will gain from employing them. Search JSTOR or another database for articles using search terms like "advertising business increase profits" or "business advertising gains" and so forth. I'd suggest doing preliminary research before deciding on your thesis, to make sure that you will have enough material. Once you do, write your thesis statement (the basic premise of the paper) and then make an outline of the major points you want to make which will support your thesis.

I hope this helps you get started!

Thanks,

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - choosing a topic

NEED HELP IN CHOOSING A TOPIC FOR MY BUSINESS RESEARCH PROPOSAL WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO DOING MY DISSERTATION.

Greetings!

Well, of course, "Business" is a very broad topic! I assume you must have a background in business and at least a bachelor's degree in some aspect of business. If there is a particular area that interests you, or something you wish to accomplish once you have your graduate degree (is it going to be a Ph.D.?), that would help narrow it down. It's always a challenge to choose something which has not been done before (if it's for a Ph.D.) but which is also going to have enough materials available so that you can do the research that you need to do. If you could tell me in what areas your interests lie, I could perhaps give you more specific help.

Thanks,

unethical hiring practices (human resource research paper)

I'm working on a human resource paper. My topic is unethical hiring practices. Can someone help me with an outline and some great peer reviewed sources.

Google Scholar and your local library are great places to find sources. Once you have read up on the topic, you can probably create an outline on your own. Then, you can write up a first draft and post it here for some feedback on your work.

I know that findarticles.com is also a good one. I just googled the term: human resources articles

... and I got a lot of results. For example: humanresources.about.com/cs/a.htm

It should be easy to come up with a good outline after reading a few articles and forming an opinion. Jam five articles together with your own intellect in crazy alchemy... and see what brilliant thesis statement emerges. It's easy!!

Reward management project and achieving business goals.

hie...

l want to write a project on reward management against achieving business goals. how best can l tackle this project?

Research the topic. Start with the Internet, Google Books being a particularly good site to search for sources. Then try tracking down some hard copy sources from your local library that discuss your topic or relevant aspects thereof. Once you have a good idea of what the experts have to say about reward management and achieving business goals, you can decide which experts you agree with and which ones you disagree with. In so doing, you will pretty much automatically formulate at least a rudimentary thesis statement, which will point the way to a more detailed outline. Good luck.

Reward management? Sounds like an interesting project. Do you have any good articles about this subject? The great thing about research like this is that you can look at what other people have done recently in this field and see how you can add to it or improve it. The first step is to read about what other people have done in this field. Are you familiar with the current research in the area of strategic management and business leadership?

Please see our comments in similar threads. A doctoral dissertation is a serious piece of research upon which you will spend months or years of your life. Strangers cannot select topics for you without knowing something about your interests and experiences. You should not settle for a topic selected by strangers but should be reading extensively and meeting with your adviser at the university in order to determine a topic that will be sufficiently original and rigorous to meet the university's requirements while at the same time feasible for you to pursue.

Also, PLEASE AVOID TYPING IN ALL CAPS, which is considered as shouting online.

If you are going to go into HRM, you must have some interests related to it. The important thing for you to do is use a word search in a database of articles and spend an afternoon reading research articles written by other HRM professionals. See what is happening in the field. One important phenomenon in recent years is managing change and managing diversification, internationalization, and so forth. Much has been written about the way to mitigate problems associated with change.

Try qustia or Google Scholar to see what other scholars are writing. After that, spend some time reading about different kinds of research design. Google: quantitative qualitative research methods.

Hello!
I just Googled 'International Human Resource Management case studies', and found many examples. I suggest you do the same and choose a case study. This may make it clear in your mind as to where to start your essay, or at least what you will write about. See what you can do with it and come on back. Good luck!

I think Yacine is looking for ideas about what to do the case study on.

If you follow susan's advice, you'll see what case studies have been done in HRM (there are a lot!!) and you can choose an area you are interested in. How about some case studies of companies going international? You can do case studies of companies that displace laborwers and offshore the positions. The idea, though, is to have a theme, something that interests you in the company. And then you analyze the heck out of it.

Do a case study of the HR department of some company that was involved in a scandal!

Go to the database you will be using to find articles. Will you use your school's database? If not, choose a good one. Search for these key words: human resource management

When the list comes up, skim through it to see what topics have had a lot of articles written about them. Choose a topic you understand.

One good topic to choose is "outsourcing." search for this: human resource management outsourcing labor.

You will see a lot of articles other people have written. You can write one just as good.

also try searching for: Human resource management "case study" outsourcing

Hello! Well, thhe most important thing is that it should be smething you can get interested in. Also, though, it should be useful for HRM professionals in modern times. Current topics in HRM include lots of different things, but a big issue is internationalization, the displacement of workers, and other things related to globalization.

If I were you, I would read some research studies. For example, you can read an article called "The cross-cultural puzzle of international human resource management" and look at the Literature Review section. Most articles have a Literature Review, and they will tell you all about what has been going on in the field. Part of your job is to look at what HRM researchers have been doing in recent years and think of a project you would like to do to help build understanding.

It will help if you Google John Cresswell and look at his explanations of research designs, and then read some literature reviews. You can ENJOY it if you spend enough time reading. :-)

If you are in HRM, you should be interested in reading many, many articles. Conflict resolution, managing diversity, sexual harassment, gender issues, outsourcing/offshoring labor... it is a huge field.

I can list lots of topics, but it would be better to type "human resource management" into your school's database. You will see thousands of titles that reveal excellent topics.

Try this...
search for these words: human resource management "literature review"
Choose an article that is interesting to you, and read the section called literature review. This will show you all the recent research in this ares of HRM. So, if you read an article about managing diversity, the lit review will tell you about the most important articles and books about it. Then, you will get an idea about what YOU want to contribute to the ongoing discussion of this topic.

So, it is all about reading some literature reviews in articles that you enjoy.

what is substituting Trade unions in IT companies.

I think I understand. You want to find out "What is Being Substituted for Trade Unions at IT Companies."

But are you sure something is being substituted? Maybe they do not exist at IT companies for other reasons...

Search your school database for this:
"trade unions" "IT companies" (and use quote marks like I did here)

You should read what other people have written in the past 5 years, and see if you agree or disagree with them. That is the first step. Then, read the work of John Cresswell about "research design," and think of a design for your research study. Maybe you should use case studies of some IT companies.

:-)

I need a topic in Human Resources dealing with employee retention or selection...

This is an applied research topic that I need for my MBA. I originally wanted to compare standard results of an exit interview with a post-exit interview. I still like the idea but I need to be more specific since there is enough information about this study since 2008. Apparently my idea came a little late. If you have any suggestions for this area of HR (selection/retention) please let me know and thanks....Clayton Sanders
EF_Kevin 8 / 13,321 129
Jul 7, 2010   #35
Hi Clayton,

Well the idea of doing two sets of interviews is great.

My first idea that comes to mind for you is that it is important to find a real problem that needs to be solved. Too often, we root around for research ideas and forget to find something really purposeful.

What organizations can you access? Is this a particular org with which you're affiliated? Can you do a multiple case study?

A study like this can be unique simply because of focusing on a particular organization at a particular time in history?

Many studies of selection and retention have focused on cultural issues...

You can do a unique combination -- a particular group (i.e. cultural group) in a particular industry.

You can use a lit review to look at the most prominent issues in retention in a particular industry, and then use rating scales to get respondents categorized according to each of the major issues.

OR do exploratory qualitative work using grounded theory and come up with new theory.

I hope some of this is useful to you!

Research methodology subject: need to find a topic on HRDM

Can someone please help me to find a topic on Human Resource Management?
This for my research methodology subject. Thanks. :)
EF_Kevin 8 / 13,321 129
Dec 7, 2010   #37
Hi Joyce,

I think you mean to say you are taking a class about Research Methods. Is that right? Maybe you are studying about quantitative and qualitative methods.

I have an idea that might make it easy for you. Think of a HRM article that interests you, and identify the topic. For example, "employee motivation" or "absenteeism" and search your library database for:

HRM, survey, [name of topic]

So if you want to read about absenteeism search for:
HRM, survey, absenteeism

That way, you will find a lot of research studies that use survey designs. Read them, and then read online about survey designs. Become an expert on survey research, and use it, because it is a good approach and easy to use.

i have done my MBA in human resource management. now i m going to to ma ph.d in the same subject.kindly suggest me some good topics

Hello friend, I think when people ask for topics to be suggested they are proceeding the wrong way. First of all, it is easy to just google this: HRM research topics, list

If you google that, you will get a lot of topics!

But I think the best way is to ENJOY your reading. Just read some research articles that interest you. Make sure they are recent. Read recent articles, and it will be easy to notice the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES TODAY. What are the most important HRM issues? I think you should wait until you find an article that fascinates you, and that might give you the GREAT IDEA you need for your own original research.
