Help Starting a Global Warming - Argumentative Research Paper

Ok, so I have to write an argumentative research paper on global warming...My professor suggested I focus on human responsibility. This is because I believe humans are a fairly large factor with green house gasses. It has to be 10 pages long double spaced and argumentative as I said before. I would like to talk a lot about what we can do as humans to help prolong life on Earth...recycling, petroleum free vehicles, avoiding burning fossil fuels...etc...I suppose my main issue at the moment, is coming up with a decent thesis, which can give me a good amount of subtopics to discuss. I've been doing some research on global warming as a whole, and I'm finding that there is just so much information I don't know what to do with it all. Any thesis ideas along what I'm reaching for...and maybe some good topics that might have the right amount of information to be useful?

Thank you for your time,
S

Greetings!

It can be great to research a topic on which much has been written, but the flip side, as you have discovered, is that there can be a lot to wade through! Here's an idea for a thesis: "For millenia, humans have treated the Earth as a never-ending resource, to be utilized and squandered at will. Recent years have shown that there is a price to be paid for this hubris, and the prospect of catastrophic results from global warming have the Earth's human inhabitants scrambling to make amends before it is too late. While the cure is neither quick nor certain, there are things which people can do to diminish their contribution to the problem of global warming, lighten the imprint of their footprint on the Earth, and perhaps even reverse the damage which has been done."

A start similar to this will introduce both the topic of global warming and lay the groundwork for the solutions you will discuss. You can start with what is known about the causes of global warming, its initial rejection and reluctant acceptance as a theory, and then get into the things we can do to ameliorate it.

I hope this helps get you started!

Thank you very much, this will definately get me going. I tend to draw mental blocks in the writing process, so this was a big help. Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be back with questions.

Greetings!

While I haven't done an in-depth study on the effects of global warming on human health, I can give you some ideas to get you headed in the right direction. One change we are already seeing, according to many scientists, is global warming's effect on the weather. There seem to be more hurricanes, tsunamis, floods and other types of storms within the past few years, and these definitely impact human health. Not only do they kill and injure people, but flooding can spread disease. For example, after Hurricane Katrina, the water that inundated New Orleans was toxic and very dangerous to people and animals. Storm debris can lead to injuries which can become infected with tetanus; people who must live in make-shift shelters tend to become ill more easily and disease can spread rapidly through refugee camps. Flooding can also lead to more insects, particularly mosquitoes, which can spread malaria and the West Nile virus.

There are probably many journal articles about this topic. Try browsing through your school library's online database. I hope this helps get you started!

Greetings!

The most persuasive argument against global warming being caused by humans, which promotes the idea the it is a natural phenomenon, is based on historical climatological data. There have been numerous periods over the centuries (and millenia) which have fluctuated greatly in temperature. There have been ice ages followed by long periods which were much warmer. Look for articles about this by using search terms such as "global warming natural phenomenon" and "ice age" and other relevant terms. You might also want to check out a floor speech by Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe on global warming (he believes it is a hoax). He mentions several scientists and authors who have written on the subject of global warming as a natural phenomenon. Google "Senator Inhofe global warming."

I hope this helps!
