Hello,

I need to write an analytical essay on a social issue for my application on Liberal Arts and Sciences
This is the first time I'm diving into this and I'm kind of running around hysterically with no idea what to do

I was thinking about doing an essay on Gay Parenting
but obviously that isn't specific enough.
I only have 800 words to put a strong essay together, but I'm kindof struggling to come up with a decent thesis.
What I want is something thats really pinpointed, zoom in on a small aspect

I dont know if this makes sense but...ye

Could anyone help me out creating a decent thesis on this topic?

Tnx in advance

but obviously that isn't specific enough.

How about this - "Is Gay Parenting ethical or unethical? "
Here you can discuss the issue from different perspectives such as from the point of Gay Parents, Society, and the kids they are adopting. I feel it's quite a good topic in terms of its applicability to today's society. Also, you can find loads of ideas and information from other websites if you google for this topic. Please do that an post it here because I am very much interested to read it. I am sure it'll be very interesting writing :)

I think you might be right because its not the most common topic on gay parenting
I've mainly found alot of essays on the scientific aspect (what affects does gay parenting have on children)

The thing with this thesis would be though that there's often referred to marriage, marriage results in parenting and thus would it be ethical to allow gay people to marry giving them legal rights to, for example, adopt?

It might however be possible to get my arguments set up like this

For gays: depriving them of equal rights on marriage and thus making it harder to adopt; Is this ethical/unethical when focussing on human rights.

For society: I haven't quite figured this one out... maybe something on how it would conflict with religion and common beliefs?

For children: is it ethical/unethical to deprive children of what is believed to be the best foundation for children; a father and a mother. (I could grip back on studies showing that there is no scientific proof on gay parenting being bad for children.)

Would this be a good set-up of arguments?

Yes, I too feel it's a good arrangement.
For society; yes religion, culture, common beliefs all that have a role to play here.
For children: what you have already thought about is very good. I also like if you discuss the social pressures on such children - they may be subject to bullying, corned by other children etc.

I think you can come up with a great essay on this topic :)

Thanks for the advice so far.
Debating with you guys on this is really helping me in the right direction to get away from the standard essay arguments that I've found.

I do guess this thesis would mean I also have to implement a bit of the gay marriage debate because it seems this is often set at the basis of gay parenting.

So i guess in some ways it will be somewhat of a mash-up between the two topics.

Maybe I could make my essay look abit like this:

Intro:
Explain the connection between gay marriage and gay parenting so I can use both for arguments

Analysis I: (Argument I)
Is it okay to deprive gays of equal rights (Ive also read something about depriving them of marriage causes worse health conditions. And something more about what it does to them to really start a family...

(I might have to find more on what not being able to be a parent does to them)

Analysis II (Argument II)
How gay marriage/parenting interfers with the common beliefs and religion

Analysis III (Argument III)
What are the needs of children, are they more pressured in society, and i read in a study that marriage will increase the feelings of a child being in a married-parents family

I think ethics wise it will be really hard to seperate marriage from parenting because the two have been seen in a cause-result relationship from the early days on

been thinking about this a bit more...

isnt it like a bit too big to start talking about it being ethical or not...? because "ethical" is a pretty heavy word...

maybe any way of rephrasing the thesis because i think the argumentative part could be pretty strong
