Did you know, even the richest in Hollywood could lose something so valuable they would not be able to buy it back? Joel Coles a young 28 year old man was a writer. Joel's mom was a successful actress when he was young which let him wanting to be successful. Joel receives an invitation to go to Miles Calman's house located in Beverly Hills on Sunday. The author of "Crazy Sunday" is Francis Scott Fitzgerald. "Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, in St. Paul, to a businessman and an heiress. His desire to become a writer crystallized early and remained a driving force throughout his life."(Milne). In Fitzgerald, Francis Scott's story "Crazy Sunday" Fitzgerald utilizes various literacy devices including characterization, surprise ending and setting to illustrate his theme of you never know what you have until it's gone.

Characterization plays a role in "Crazy Sunday" in many ways. "He was a handsome man with the pleasant cow brown eyes that in 1913 had gazed out at Broadway audiences from his mother's face."(Fitzgerald 698). Fitzgerald portrays characterization when it says, "Miles Calman, tall, nervous, with a desperate humor and the unhappiest eyes Joel ever saw."(Kuehl 90). Fitzgerald explains that people, who see Miles, look at him like a hero. He sure does put a smile on his audience's face but for him it's making money but always being sad. He has always been the opposite when he was young looking at his mom being the audience and having a smile on his face, now that he has gotten older there is no smile on him now. His luxurious life illustrates that even being rich is not all that and that it means what you are. Also the editor John Kuehl uses characterization when it says, "An artist from the top of his curiously shaped head to high niggerish feet" (Kuehl, 90). It represents that even though asking many questions is annoying, knowledge can take Miles to places he would never think. Also back then in the 1800's during slavery many blacks were not as wealthy and it illustrates he is. Fitzgerald speaks in many ways to express his emotion and feeling throughout the characterization of his story.

A completely unexpected revelation or turn of plot at the conclusion of a story or play is called Surprise Ending."The plane fell just this side of Kansas City. The body of Miles Calman has been identified..." (Fitzgerald, 711). Stella, Miles wife keeps Joel with her in order "To keep Miles alive by sustaining a situation in which he had figured" (Bloom, 73). The character Stella has cheated on Miles with Joel and she knows that Miles had always tried to spy on them both to see if there is any situation. So the only way to know he is somewhere still in the world is to keep Joel with her and make Miles keep wondering what they are doing. Later on after Miles death Stella says, "You won't go. You like me...you love me, don't you?"(Fitzgerald, 713). She is now freaking out that she loved her husband and when she finds out he has passed away she does not want to feel alone, so Joel says "Oh yes, I'll be back...I'll be back."(Bloom, 73). He lies to Stella to make it that, he is coming back which he will not, and to make it look like that it wasn't his fault of the death of Miles Calman. During the end of the summary Stella feels like she is no more when she says," Oh, my God, you don't know how alone I feel."(Fitzgerald, 713. In the end there is a loss for somebody in example Miles is dead Stella is left alone and Joel is now alone.

The time, place, and circumstances in which a narrative, drama, or film takes place are all characteristics of setting. "Miles Calman's house was built for great emotional moments."(Fitzgerald, 698). This resembles that in the house there are situations that happen that are called emotional such as, "He falls in love with her in a passive, romantically apathetic way, and when she becomes successful as an actress, she rejects him for an actor."(Milne, 1). Stella ends up using this quote when she gets married to 'An artist from the top of his curiously shaped head to his niggerish feet."(Kuehl, 90). Stella becomes wife and later on when she is named Mrs. Calman she leaves him knowing that half his wealth is now with her. She then cheats with another man Known as Joel. Later on when Miles goes to see Stella during the beginning of the story it says "He was twenty eight and not yet broken by Hollywood" (Fitzgerald, 698). He keeps on chasing his love Stella has he knows she does not want him anymore when it says "But at seventeen, months are years and Jacob perceived a change in her; in no sense was she a child any longer. (Milne, 2) Stella is now old enough she realizes she doesn't have to be with who she wants to be. And then they realize that Miles is chasing Stella which represents Hollywood and he has still not realized that she wants no more in this relationship. The meaning Fitzgerald explains is that having a relationship with someone does not mean that they like you; they could be there for your money then run off with someone else. The story is coming to an end and there have been many sacrifices.

Finally Fitzgerald's story "Crazy Sunday" has played a role in 3 literary elements which I have shown you those writing. Fitzgerald writes to show many of his thoughts and reason. Another reason why Fitzgerald writes his story "Crazy Sunday is to represent his theme of you never know what you have until it's gone.

MLA guidelines recommend that you underline the titles of books (novels, anthologies, biographies, et al). Most college professors don't like italics (or contractions, for that matter, so don't use 'em, LOL). If you're using something from an anthology, then what you are referencing is probably a short story or a poem, and you should use quotation marks around the title.
