Assessment: Electronic Resources Research Exercise

  Feb 17, 09, 09:05am  #
Dear all,

I have to do an electronic research exercise, which involves:
first of all choosing an essay question and then picking out keywords (i think) from the essay question and two primary texts that you will use to do this question.

My question is:

1. Women of virtue and propriety could not appear alone in the street or other public spaces. To what extent do you find evidence in eighteenth century texts and images that this hypothesis is true? and the texts that I would be using are Moll Flanders and Evelina. (if you have ever heard of them? I think this would be appropriate to the question)

For each of the ten online electronic research resources listed below (a to j), undertake a relevant search, and then complete the following two tasks:
(i) Print out the first page of your search results.
(ii) Write a short statement of about 50 words assessing how useful you found this resource. This statement should identify the advantages and drawbacks of each resource you have used for finding material on your topic.

(a) Library catalogue (either QM, Senate House or British Library)
(b) OED
(c) ODNB
(d) MLA Bibliography
(e) JSTOR
(f) Project Muse
(g) An open resource (i.e. freely available) on the internet / world-wide-web
(h) Wikipedia
(i) Historical Abstracts
(j) Another relevant on-line resource from course handout 'Online Resources for Researching Research Materials'.

Your submission for this exercise will therefore comprise 500 words of your own critical writing and 10 pages of print-outs from the online resources.

What I need help with is exactly picking up the keywords! and what combination to search them in. Is there anybody who could help me with this?

Moreover some information about the pros and cons of using each of these resources. I am really stuck :(

Thank you!

Well, use " " marks for a good search. Like... try "history of gender roles"...

You can also use two search terms together, like "Moll Flanders" and "gender roles"

JSTOR costs money, but the articles are more credible than wiki.

Wiki is great, but it can have errors, and it is not good to cite in academic papers.

Another good online resource is Google Scholar.

Good luck!!!

thanks

do you have any more suggestions on the keywords that I could use?

So far, I have been using stuff like "virtue and propriety" Moll flanders.. and basically been doing this for both of the books.
