Science fair research paper - how to start/goal of?

Sep 27, 2008   #1
Wonderful, they've put me in gifted biology.
Which means two words. Two dreaded, evil words:
science fair.

And all the perks that go along with it.
Which include the research paper, the veryvery best part that just warms my heart at the thought of writing it.
Sarcasm, I get in trouble for it.

SO, after hunting down probably the easiest experiment ever, "How Temperature Affects the Strength of a Magnet," (over-achiever, arn't I?) I need a bit of help on how to start off my paper.

I know that magnetic strength is supposed to weaken with heat and become greater with.. coldness? Hope that's a word. Anyway, I was just wondering what exactly the goals of a science fair research paper were and how I could tie those in with my topic. And of course, I've never been good with introductions, so some tips on starting off would be very much appreciated.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, whoever helps. (:

Good afternoon.

Well, it sounds like you've got the toughest part done: you know your topic. As far as sample science fair research papers, or examples of other texts such as what you are to create, I suggest you conduct an internet keyword search for "science fair research papers"; this will give you an idea as to what is already out there.
As to "coldness" perhaps better could be "...weaken with heat and grow stronger with lesser temperatures" or something to that effect.
As to the introduction, I find it easier to write the rough draft with all of your data and information first, then do the conclusion, and wrap back around to the beginning and write the intro last. After all, how are you to write an intro explaining to your reader what you are going to tell them in the paper if you have not written the paper yet? :) I'm sure that once you have the rough draft organized you will find something to hook your readers with.

I hope this helps. When you get the rough draft together, feel free to post it to this thread and I can help you edit/proofread.

Settle on a topic you're interested in that's science-related, and has adequate information accessible to you. Once you've done that, report back with your topic and the instructions for the assignment.
Look at what other people have done, and you will get some ideas of your own. What is your project? Check this out for ideas: all-science-fair-projects.com

When you choose a project, read some articles about th concept. For example, if your project involves battery power, read some articles about that. After each article you read, write a paragraph about what the author said. Soon, you will see a paper taking form. It'll be great!
Is this a research paper to find information on a project you have already picked, or is it a research paper meant to help you choose a project? If it's the former, you can follow the excellent advice you have already been given. If it is the latter, you would want to pick a field of study, say, wind power, and research it with a view to deciding what sort of science project you could do that would show something important about wind power. So, you would start off providing some general information about the topic, and then narrow down your area of interest more and more until by the end of the paper you had a very specific research question you could use as the basis of your project. That is, a question that your project could answer.
Merged: Need help doing Science Fair Research Paper

I need help on doing a Science Fair Research Paper, it's been a very long time since I've actually done one. My science fair is all about how to find how much energy is stored in food.

And what would be the appropiate format for it?

Please and Thanks.
It's been even longer since I wrote one, so I can't give you a whole lot of advice here. You might try Googling "Science Fair Research Paper," though, as that will give you a list of sites that discuss what you should do in far more detail than you are likely to get in posts made here.
