Greetings!

Fortunately, you have plenty of time left, especially as you have a lot of research already! The first thing you will need to do is decide what you want the focus of your paper to be. It can be daunting when the assignment is wide open, as it sounds like yours is. You could do a history of air pollution in New York, if your research will give you information about air pollution in the past. Or, you could write about the various things the city has done and is doing to combat air pollution. Let the research you have found thus far guide you in the direction you should go. Then, once you have the topic narrowed down to a particular approach, write a thesis statement that succinctly states what the paper is about, and the slant it will take. For instance, you might decide to critique New York's efforts by saying, "Although the city of New York has known about and taken steps to deal with the problem of air pollution for decades, it is still not adequately dealing with the problem." Or, you might take the opposite stance.

Thank you Sarah!
My professor returned marked and graded first version of my research paper and she suggested to make my title which is "Air Pollution in New York City" more compelling. Do you have any ideas how to make my title sound more compelling?

Thanks

Greetings!

I like the challenge of thinking up a compelling title! It really depends on the slant of your paper, though. For instance, if your thesis was that the pollution is still bad, you might allude to smog. I like jazzing a title up by tying it to a popular culture reference, so I might use "Lost in New York: Smog is Still Home Alone in New York City."

Have a little fun with it and see what you can come up with!

Hi Sarah! Thank you very much for your compelling title! I love it :) You have a very creative thinking. Do you mind if I'll post some of passages of my paper here for editing? I need to restructure some of my passages as my professor marked.

Here is my passage that needs to be restructured

"Finally, having identified air pollution as a major problem within New York City, the question becomes what can be done about it? " I think I should not use the word "finally", because its not my conclusion. Any ideas?

Thanks

" The bottom line is that New York's air is bad and something must be done about it." Should I change this sentence sounds more dangerous and instead of word "something" use more specific words, like actions that need to be taken to improve air quality. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Greetings!

I think you're correct that "something" might be a bit vague. I'm not sure what part of your essay this is, which might affect how you want to say it. But if it's in your opening paragraph, you could use it to lead into your discussion of what those actions should be. For instance, "The bottom line is that New York has a serious air quality problem and the city needs to take appropriate steps to address it." Then you could go on to discuss what those steps would be, in the paragraphs that follow. You could first give a little history about the air quality in New York before discussing solutions, if your paper leans in that direction.

I hope this helps!
