In his essay "For Whom The Cell Tolls: Why your phone may (or may not) be killing you," Rich Nathaniel supposes that cell phones may have negative effect on human health. He warns readers that cell phones might produce effect of electromagnetic field. Rich claims that holding cell phones directly against the side of a head, it might harms on human health. In contrast, he tries to inform readers that the cell phones could cause a brain tumor, weakness, and sometimes a death. Also, he thinks that electromagnetic radiation might elicits the risk of leukemia and it might poses risk of getting a cancer. By making researches, Nathaniel wants to inform readers that cell phones may have negative effect of electromagnetic fields on human health, despite the facts that some scientists, telecom organizations, and even military do not argue.
Nathaniel emphasizes that point of view by scientists are very heterogeneous. In his essay appear dozen of facts and opinions, which are published by scientists that a cell-phone radiation might have either positive or negative effect on human health. According to Mann and Roschke "exposure to cell-phone radiation makes one sleepy," (45). However, according to Wagner et al, "exposure to cell-phone radiation has no effect on sleep patterns," (46). These findings suggest that there are adherents who believe in effect of electromagnetic field (EMF). On the other hand there are opponents, who don't believe in cell phones radiation. Nathaniel does not affirm these findings, but he warns readers that they might be exposed by cell phones radiation.
Whether or not cell phones may cause a brain tumor, this topic is unfamiliar for people, even if cell phones are used by hundreds millions of people. According to Rich "There are now 276 million U.S. cell-phone subscribers; the entire U.S. population is 309 million." (48). In his essay, a man called Morgan, he believes in the fact that cell phones might cause a brain tumor. He thinks that he is a victim of electromagnetic field on him life. He used to come across lots of findings such as: in Risk Analysis, Radiation and Environmental Biophysics or Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He claims that there is "a partial correlation between electromagnetic radiation and the risk of leukemia." (44).
Nathaniel's shows that every year in the US, there are diagnosed many people to find out if they suffer from a brain tumor. It is so hard to report a statement whether or not cell phones cause a brain tumor, if results aren't recorded for a time. In his article, according to Morgan," most states did not keep records on the incidence of benign". Morgan proposed a motion, "the Benign Brain Tumor Cancer Registries Amendment Act" (47), to register all cases of diagnosed people on a brain tumor. In 2002, it has been accepted by Congress. Morgan asserts that, "the incidence of nonmalignant tumors in the United States increased every year between 2000 and 2004, at a rate the Central Brain Tumor". Morgan could contribute to prove the effect of electromagnetic fields, on human health, but some scientists have different opinion.
Nathaniel believes that within several years the mystery if cell phones cause a brain tumor or not will be solved. "The first generation of regular, or obsessive, cell-phone users has now been at it for ten years. The latency period for brain tumors may be as long as thirty years. So by the late 2020s, the debate should be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties: we will either see a stunning increase in the rate of brain cancer or we will shift our paranoia to new worst-case scenarios."(53). Moreover, in his essay, according to Paul Brodeur, "electromagnetic radiation - from power lines, radar antennae, and video-display terminals - increased the risk of cancer." (45). Paul's study about increased the risk of cancer first time has been made in 1976, then in 1989 and finally in 1990. It shows that the electromagnetic fields are effective, on human health in the longer period of time, within a several years.
Rich contemplates an option that telecom organizations and military, even if they know that electromagnetic radiation might have negative on human health, they cannot agree with this statement because they depend on electro technology such as cell phones, towers, and Wi-Fi. Furthermore, they don't agree some scientist that electromagnetic might cause a brain tumor because "many of these findings are dismissed due to their funding sources" (Rich 50).In 2007 were published BioInitiative Report, that contains 610 pages, which were written by twelve scientists and two activists. They believe that "low electronic magnetic radiation may damage health." (50). Telecom organization, called "Big Telecom" and military disagree with the statement that electromagnetic may cause damage on health. Rich tries to explain that it is so hard to prove that using cell phone might have negative effects on health. According to physicists "if cell phones have not been definitely proved to be safe, it is often almost impossible to prove a negative". It is fact that military and telecom industry such as Verizon Wireless and AT&T (American Telephone and Telegram) are the power of the world, where electromagnetic field is used.
Moreover, Rich depicts fact that U.S government wrote a section 704 of the Federal Telecommunication Act. Because of this section "no local government could prevent the construction of cell phone tower" (Rich 48). The telecom industries had influence on writing this section. The Telecom industries can built a cell phone towers with the intention to have habits and not allow other companies such as the Internet or cable television to expand.
According to Rich, there are those who say those cell phone towers are not safe on human health. Libby Kelly, a former public-health analyst at the Department of Health and Human Services says, "a cell phone tower was going to be erected on the steeple of the church where her adopted son attended preschool," ( Kelley 48). This situation involved in her doubts if the section 704 should be existed in the government. She was doing research and she started speaking publicity about influence cell phone tower on human health. Because of doing research and searching true if cell phone towers may have effect on human health, she was haunted, her home was broken and all cell phone research, which she did, were stolen. She was asked by Rich, who could her haunted? According to Kelly "it could have been the telecom industry, her local government, or even the military." (49). Rich gives an example of Kelly to show that, military and telecom organizations they might be aware that cell phones towers might have negative effect on human heath but they don't argue with this statement because of benefits. Rich gives to readers to think if holding cell phones against the side of the head and cell phones towers may have negative effect on human health. What it the purpose of some scientists, military and telecom that they don't argue with the statement of causing a brain tumor, weakness, and sometimes a death by electronic radiation. Also, author shows that they are lots of scientists who say that using cell phones cause problem with health, and there are lots of scientists who disagree. He leaves a choice and informs readers, if we believe in his statement
