I intend to apply for enrollment into a Master of Public Health degree program. Can you please look at my statement of purpose and help if there are areas I need to work on before I can be able to send it.Below is the essay:
Studies have revealed that many workers in the developing world, especially those in the informal sector where the majority of them work, continue to lose their lives to work-related diseases. The level of occupational safety and health in Africa in general and in XXXXX in particular, is generally low compared with the rest of the world. In Sub-Saharan Africa, public health problems are so massive that occupational health and safety problems are subordinate to those like child mortality, malnutrition, water quality and HIV/AIDS.
My life-long dream is to serve my country, Southern Africa as a region and the world at large by saving lives through prevention of all preventable occupational diseases and injuries. This prompted me to enroll for a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Environmental Science and Health at the XYZ University in YYYYY and I graduated in 2007 with an Upper Second Class. Even though my undergraduate programme has given me a strong background of various environmental management concepts, I feel I have not really explored the discipline satisfactorily and that my research capabilities could improve through more classroom and independent environmental health investigations.
After college I joined XXXXXXX Mining Company in January 2008 as a Graduate Trainee: Safety, Health and Environmental Management. This was a two-year structured Graduate Development Program where I was under the guidance and tutelage of an experienced and qualified Safety, Health and Environmental practitioner. After successfully fulfilling the requirements of the learnership program, I was appointed to the post of XXXXXXXXXSafety, Health and Environmental Officer in the Projects department.
There is a critical shortage of trained and qualified Occupational Health and Safety personnel at every level in both government and industry for effective policy/decision making in XXX(my country). At the moment there is no institution of higher learning offering post-graduate studies in Occupational Health and Safety in XXXX(my country). The country has been investing in the training of many curative professionals (nurses and medical doctors) at the expense of environmental and occupational health experts who are required for advocating and implementing programs for the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Therefore, the MPH will help me become an instrumental citizen of XXXX(my country), using all my skills, expertise and energies to bring about constructive change and to save the lives of many workers in my country, Africa and the whole developing world.
