Statement of Purpose
Morteza Mousavi Barroudi
Graduate Applicant
Digital Media Lab (DML),
Computer Engineering Department,
Sharif University of Technology

Degree Objective: Ph.D.
Field of Study: Computer Science

Since my childhood I have had a great enthusiasm toward Computers. As an adolescent, I soon
learned BASIC as my first programming language. Learning the basic of its graphical capabilities, I enjoyed developing simple programs and tiny games which soon attracted my family and friends at school. I was also very keen on designing remote control systems for my toys using simple electronic devices and elements. It took a while till I became familiar with the concepts of Information Technology and since then; I knew what my future dream was.

After graduating from high school, I decided to continue my studies in the fields of computer engineering and information technology. In 1999, due to my good performance in high school and nationwide University entrance exam I was admitted to Computer Engineering Department of University of Mashhad, one of the most prestigious Universities in Iran. There I perused my education in Software Engineering. After 1 years of study, I found a job as a computer trainer and software developer. Although I enjoyed working hard about 30 hours per week, the impact on my BS GPA was inevitable. In spite of that, I was still above the department average.

Soon I got familiar with geographical information systems and wireless communications and networking. Because of my interests in GIS I chose my bachelor thesis about Intelligent Transportation Systems and Fuzzy Traffic Control. In my BS thesis I did a comprehensive survey on global positioning systems and traffic modeling and control which made me very eager to continue my study and research in this filed. Therefore, I did my best to enter a graduate school, which required passing another nationwide entrance exam, covering about 10 courses in computer engineering.

In 2004, I ranked 7rd among approximately 10,000 talented participants, and was admitted to the Information Technology graduate program (computer and communication networks major) at Sharif University of Technology (SUT) which is the most competitive, Accredited and Reputable technology university in Iran.

In 2005, I joined Digital Media Lab (DML) and pursued my research under supervision of Dr. Hamid Reza Rabiee. Due to my interest in GIS and wireless communications, I Suggested a topic for my MS thesis about mobility modeling, Simulation and analysis of mobile nodes in mobile Ad-Hoc networks to my supervisor and started my research. Primarily, I founded a research group in DML called Mobility Group and defined two BS thesis projects for two very talented BS students. Subsequently, we decided to develop a multi-purpose open source software for simulation and analysis of mobility in MANETs called MobiSim.

MobiSim can simulate various mobility models in various scenarios and maps and generate mobility traces similar to GPS traces. In addition, it can analyze mobility traces collected from real world mobile nodes and recognize their mobility pattern and predict their future position using statistical pattern recognition and machine learning methods. We tried to implement our knowledge of object-oriented design and software patterns to make it modular and extendable as much as possible. We shared it on sourceforge.net website to be used by other researchers all around the world.

Moreover, in my MS thesis, I suggested new ideas in mobility modeling, mobility pattern recognition, mobility prediction, mobility aware power management, mobility aware topology control and mobility aware routing and published 5 conference papers. Finally, I defended my thesis with outstanding grade 20 out of 20 in 2007.

Subsequent to that, in 2007, I joined the faculty of computer engineering of Qom University, Iran. I am currently working there as a lecturer. I have taught various courses including: computer networks, introduction to computer programming, advanced computer programming, object oriented programming, machine language and system programming, system analysis and design, software engineering, system modeling and simulation, and expert systems.

Furthermore, in 2007, Due to my achievement and experiences in my MS thesis, my supervisor Dr Hamid R. Rabiee suggested me to continue my research in DML under his supervision and offered me a RA fund. I continued working as a research associate and research manager of MANET research group (Mobility Group) in DML. Since then I have defined and managed two MS thesis and 5 BS thesis projects. We have continued working on MobiSim and improved its capabilities and uploaded a new version on Sourceforge.net. We have also worked on Mobility Aware QOS multimedia streaming as a very challenging research topic and published 2 conference papers and I have currently 4 journal papers under preparation.

I am seeking a graduate position in a prestigious and accredited department to continue my research and study as a Ph.D. student. I'm cognizant of the importance of academic atmosphere, a good advisor, a well equipped lab and a coherent team in conducting research and I believe all of these are available at Rutgers.

In graduate studies at Rutgers University, I hope to continue research involving Mobility modeling, analysis and simulation in wireless mobile vehicular and Ad-Hoc networks; I am particularly interested and have new ideas in mobility aware QOS multimedia streaming, power management and topology control, and using data mining and statistical methods for analysis and management of mobility in wireless vehicular networks. I am also interested in P2P networking, social networks, and intelligent multi-agent systems.

In reviewing the research interests and publications of Rutgers faculty of computer science,
I have found my objectives in accordance with interests of Professor Liviu Iftode considering his research interests and outstanding publications in vehicular computing and networking, location aware services, and social networks.

One last attracting point about Rutgers University is the cultural diversity of the students, making it a natural choice for someone who was not born in USA.

After completing my Ph.D., I would prefer to primarily resume my research at a research-oriented organization where I can practice my skills in wireless networks and GIS into experiments and conduct research. Due to my teaching skill I've also considered teaching at a university and instilling my enthusiasm toward computer networks and computer systems in students. Eventually, I am eager to introduce new services and new service models and schemes and the possibility of using my understanding of computer science to influence wireless network oriented services. I envision a career in computer science and engineering as a culmination of my various interests and would appreciate the opportunity to accomplish this at Rutgers.

I think you might do better sometimes if you cut out the weak modifyers (adjectives and adverbs):
Since my childhood I have had a great enthusiasm toward (let's replace this weak phrase with something that will linger in the reader's mind) Computers. As an adolescent, I soon

learned BASIC as my first programming language. Learning the basic fundamentals of its graphical capabilities, I enjoyed developing simple programs and tiny games which soon attracted my family and friends at school.

Your seriousness and honesty are really apparent here; this is impressive!

After one yea r of study, I found a job as...

My enjoyment of and knack for teaching compels me to also consider teaching at a university where I can instill in students my ent husiasm toward computer networks and computer systems.
