I am a chemical engineer by education and training. My first job in a dyestuff manufacturing facility, I encountered many industrial problems. I learned about the inefficiencies of the processes pertaining to the pollution and the perspective that industries hold. I also observed the perception of large scaled industries, while working at xxx leading caustic soda manufacturing facility for a short period of time. During that time, I was exposed to the problems of achieving higher efficiency in practicality. I agree with Paul Hawken's thought that most businesses still operate according to a world view that hasn't change since the start of the industrial revolution. I found that how inefficiency affects not only the production but also the environment, which is the ultimate resource for any process.
During my Undergraduate studies, I worked, at the renowned xxx company, on Odor Removal from Steam Condensate for over five months. During the course of this work, I interacted with post graduate students at University lab conducting research in biofiltration, treatment of distillery effluent by bacteria and so forth. I learnt a great deal about water quality, standards, testing, and later on, about the worldwide water crisis. I feel the need to educate myself further about the issues central to our generation and understand the core of this conflict between the way man carries out his activities and the manner in which the economy interacts with the ecosystem. Eventually, I want to contribute to technology as I do believe there are sustainable ways in which we can go about fulfilling our needs.
My urge to learn more about advanced technology, led me to do my Masters degree at XXX University, where I focused my studies on the nanomaterials, their properties, and their applications. My work for Masters Project is based on "XXX". It is a process characterization project in order to gain higher yield of the process with better control. The silicon membranes are being used for fabricating very efficient MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) pressure sensors. Miniaturization is a revolutionary not only to make microchips but also to use certain composite materials to remove targeted impurities from environment.
I expect that pursuing a PhD. in any one of my chosen fields (alternative energy and\ environmental remediation or nanomaterials) will transform me into an individual of greater productivity and value. I am convinced that being a part of your esteemed program will further me in achieving my idea of engaging myself with an institution that is committed to the belief that the value of research and scholarly activities should be promoted through shared responsibilities and collaborations across disciplines within and beyond the university. Rigorous training at your facility, which tirelessly maintains its hard earned reputation as a breeding ground for engineering talent, will help lead my aspirations to fruition. Based on the research interests and publications, I think Dr. XXX would be an excellent advisor for my research work.
