My motivation to become a physician's assistant comes from my experience working with the mentally and developmentally disabled. Working with this population has taught me about patience, altruism, respect, and how adequate healthcare continues to be a crisis for everyone. I work in a government agency and although the individuals I work with all receive the medical attention they need, it is a battle to find doctors and other healthcare professionals that will accept them as patients due to their disabilities and vast healthcare needs. For me becoming a physician's assistant means being able to help those in need, despite disability, social status, ethnicity, or any other prejudice.
The physician's assistant profession is one of compassion, integrity, and respect. They are hardworking yet easygoing, scholarly yet fun to be around. I admire this career path because they are real people who try to do their best on a daily basis. I believe I would make a great physician's assistant because I try to live my life, and excel in my career using those same qualities. At times working in my current profession can be very trying, both mentally and physically. I've dealt with punches, crying, biting and more, but instead of walking away I care for the individuals I work with to the best of my ability, and take each day as a new learning experience. The knowledge and experience I've acquired thus far can also be used as I venture into my goal of becoming a physician's assistant.
To provide accessible healthcare is the main reason I would like to become a physician's assistant. Growing up in a rural area I know what poverty is and what it is like having limited access to healthcare services. The physician's assistant was created to alleviate this issue by delivering cost-effective services across diverse settings, rural to overpopulated and underserved. I've seen the effects of inadequate healthcare both growing up and in the mental and developmental health fields, and I know that many illnesses and some long term disabilities can be avoided if preventative services and healthcare providers are present. Providing healthcare services to at risk communities and educating on health are what I want to do, and I feel the physician's assistant career is the correct path for me as they are dedicated to lifelong learning, creating positive patient relationships, and community service.
There is a saying "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that is why it is called the present." I've made mistakes in my life and bad decisions that I cannot take back, but I will not gloom and dwell on those mistakes. Now is about doing better, not only for myself but for my family, community, and everyone who has supported me along my journey. Becoming a physician's assistant will give me the opportunity to use my experiences and education to help enrich the lives of others and also help create a better future in healthcare.
