Questions regarding SOP (lenght, research)

Hello, I want to ask some questions before I start writing SOP.

1. What is a decent length (how many characters) for SOP?

2. I spent first 3 years of undergraduate preparing for the medical schools which I applied last year (though I didn't get into any) but the last one year of my devotion in undergrad research really got me interested in pursuing graduate study. Should I honestly mention that I've applied to medical schools in my SOP? Should I say something like 'based on my passion for science and interests in medicine, I decided to pursue graduate study in biomedical science'? Wouldn't adcom think that I'm just applying to grad school because I failed to get into med school? (which is not really true by the way; I've been always greatly interested in science) Any suggestion on how to elaborate this?

The length varies a lot. Undergrads often write shorter ones than grad student applications. Two pages might be safe.

I think you should briefly mention having contemplated med school, and then focus on giving lots of details about your academic intentions, your professional intentions -- as if you have your whole life planned out.
