I am applying MEng in Chemical Engineering. I am studying Chemistry in University of Birmingham now. Can anyone give me some feedback on my personal statement, please? Here is the personal statement.

Chemical engineering appeals to me because I always wonder that how raw materials developed in lab can be processed into domestic and industrial products to make our life better. Master study in chemical engineering is to prepare and support me to be an excellent engineer and go into industry.

Therefore, I secured a one-month internship in China with Thermal Power Research Institute Company, where I worked on a project for a waste water treatment department undertaking nuclear plant cyclic water quality testing and consulting. I found it valuable because it not only applied my fundamental knowledge into industrial optimisation, but also developed my understanding of engineering.

I have research interest in the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide because it is a controllable approach to convert CO2 to useful organic molecules and it has more commercial benefits. However, the technique needs to be improved to find a more efficient electrocatalyst for industrial application. Therefore, I would like to be involved in Prof. Sasha Omanovic's group to investigate reactivity of electrodes towards CO2 reduction.

My final year project provides me with research methodology and literature survey skills that support my interest in electrochemistry. I self-taught cyclic voltammetry by reading electrode dynamics book written by A.C. Fisher, which is an essential method to study mechanisms of electrolysis. In literature survey, I reviewed suitable bimetallic electrodes which could improve activity and selectivity towards electrochemical reduction of nitrate and nitrite, which inspired me to start my own experiment next term.

Having systematically math education makes me outstanding to study chemical engineering. Solving mathematical problems led me to think critically and deal with issues logically. In addition, the awareness of safety is the first principle for me to be a chemical engineer. I always remind myself to ensure adding right compounds and operating in a standard manner in experiments.

The abilities of teamwork and co-operation with others develop my interpersonal skills. In the second year study in University of Birmingham, I collaboratively worked with my team partners to make a video about hydrogen storage. I suggested ideas of places we should shoot and questions we should ask in interviews to Dr Pual Anderson and his PhD student. At the same time, I listened to others' opinions. Finally, we negotiated with each other and found the best structure of the video. Besides, I independently researched the material that can be used in hydrogen storage and summarised recent researches in this field.

I have high motivation and enjoy new challenges, which give me energy to do academic research. I reviewed Gd(III) metallopeptides used as contrast agents in MRI which was an unfamiliar topic to me. However, I regarded it as a good opportunity to investigate a new area and get more information that I have never known before. After studying references and contacting Dr Anna Peacock who specialises in this area, I got a superb score for the mini-review.

Planning and organisational ability are my strengths. As a head of strategy department in biology society in Beijing University of Chemical Engineering. I was responsible for proposing creative activities and considering the possible problems that might happen in activities in advance. I successfully managed my team to set up the activities in biology society.

I would like to attend the School of Chemical Engineering in Mcgill University because the research of electrochemical reduction of CO2 really attracts me. After reading the article about electrochemical reduction of CO2 on Ir/Ru-oxide electrode by N. Ullah et al., I find that it deserve to contribute myself to the project because it has great potential benefit to the environment and chemical industry. The better understanding and experimental experience of electrochemistry in my undergraduate study support me to have the ability to study and do the research in Mcgill University.

A possible revision would be: I have always wondered how raw materials are processed in laboratories. I chose Chemical engineering to study the developments , so that i can make our lives better.

Therefore, I secured a ... omit it because it lessens the impact of your internship.
