The rules are designed to ensure that people using the forums are also helping others. Please note that moderators will delete comments meant purely to increase your standing that do not offer constructive criticism.

To a certain extent it encourages contribution from members, on the other hand, its like forcing ppl to give opinions, even ppl may not want to.....not everybody has the knowledge to comment on certain issue, that may result in sub-standard comments, even moderators monitor it

That's why you can choose out of a dozen of different issues to comment on :). And even if you don't have the knowledge, it won't hurt to spend 5 minutes to read about it online. The more you know, the more you are, especially if you are a student.

Also, even someone with no particular knowledge of an essay topic can comment intelligently on how easy an essay was to read. In fact, it sometimes helps to have someone who isn't that familiar with your topic read your work, because such people are more likely to notice gaps in your logic that other readers might overlook based on their own knowledge of the subject.

Indeed, EF is a very good site for us to learn/observe how other ppl construct their essays. This learning feature is as important as putting forwards your own essay and let ppl comment on it directly. In both cases, EF moderators are critical in clearing doubts and regulating the comments. Just out of curiosity(sorry i am a new user), who are you EF moderators? are you full-time or fellow forum users? how can you spend so much time and effort in posting advices on EF?

"how can you spend so much time and effort in posting advices on EF?"

I personally view it as a result of a mixture of native brilliance, angelic temperament, and rapid typing skills. :-) I can't answer for the other moderators, though. Also, we are freelance writers who work for Essay Forums, which may have something to do with it.
