Hey I am just wondering how safe posting one's essay on this site is. I would like to get some critiques of my own essays but was wondering what prevents other visitors from copying and pasting essays off this site. Some students might pass these essays off as their own and If colleges you software such as turnitin.com to check the validity you might run into problems when submitting your own essays. I'm not saying that people here are dishonest because I truly believe 99% of the visitors want to offer their help, its just the other 1% I am suspicious about.

Thanks

In one sentence, putting your real name in your profile next to your essay prevents that.

I'm sure there are people who will do that, but there are some things that will help it: your post has a date and time, so you have proof that yours is the original.

Second, as EFTeam said, use your real name. That's more evidence.

It's really a matter of doing a cost benefit analysis. Is the improvement you will get by using this site worth the relatively small risk that someone will try stealing your work, which you can prove is yours thanks to the time stamp anyway.

How about just putting initials in your essay? Would that help? And how does the time stamp help? I really want to post mine, too.

It may help, but putting your real last name is the surest way.

Hi Erika, I certainly hope it is safe! I think you are talking about whether or not people get in trouble for collaborating here. If that is what you mean, I guess it depends on your teachers, but I don't know of anyone ever getting in trouble. Collaboration is the way things happen in the age of information; I think educators would be remiss to discourage participation in a writer's group like this one.

I'm glad you are here!

While I'm definitely not an authority on this subject, I'm pretty sure that the fact that it is dated, and has your name attached is enough to prove that the ideas are yours if you run into rouble.

Hey.
I just joined and well I'm pretty confident that plagiarism cannot happen but... there's still this tiny doubt in the back of my head...
I mean sure, I've got proof..
But suppose me and the person who stole my essay applied to the same colleges with the same essay. What are the chances that the admissions officer will actually bother checking which one the original is.
So I was wondering if there was ANY way to only show my essay to regular users and moderators.
I really like the help this site gives and I really want to post my essay here to get some help but ...it's the damn worry in my head...

Hello,

I'm going to check on that for you. Please come back and visit this thread tomorrow and with any luck I might have an answer. As far as I know, though, the only way to get an edit here is to post an essay.

Thanks for joining EssayForum!!

You could become an EF Contributor and then post your question in the private section accessible only by other contributors and moderators :). But to become a contributor you need to first help others and show your good writing and thinking skills :

I think that it is feasible to lock the right click function. If it works, no one can right click and copy our efforts. Also you may want to prevent all the special function such as CTRL+A & CTRL+C. There are scripts online for the purpose.
So can you modify the web simply by using <body oncontextmenu="return false;">.

It should makes the web safer.

I suppose no one want to open a word and type word by word while looking at the essay.

I think this website is helpful to practice writing skills. For any essays containing confidential information, please don't post it on Essay Forum.

I completely agree with Annie Ma, with not posting anything that you feel is confidential. But, this website is really resourceful, and helpful with helping you with essays.

Safe to post essay?

Is it safe to post essays here? I mean, wouldn't colleges or organizations search your essays online? And if it were on a forum, would it mean that they would think of it more negatively?

Thanks

i feel the same way-- however, using this website really helped me to improve my (sadly postponed last-minute) essays and turned them into something great. its still your own writing- ppl just make comments to help guide you in a direction you might overlook at first, bring you back to the prompt, or simply correct a grammar error you missed due to reading it yourself too much

I'm not sure...and since it costs money to remove them, I can't really do anything, although I still think colleges or organizations would look disapprovingly at this. :\ Can the mods help on this?

A Curious Question

Okay. So, I am new to this site and I had a quick question. I want to post my Admission's Essay on this site, but I don't want for it to get forged. Will or will this not happen when posting an essay?

Thanks!!

If you post an essay, maybe I will paste it into an online application and claim that I wrote it. However, if that happens and causes you a problem, you can refer people to the EssayForum post where you originally published it, and it will have your name and the date it was posted. So... EssayForum can protect you that way.

However, you do have to be aware that if you publish material to the Internet people can indeed misuse it.
