Nobel Peace Prize Nominee essay?

I have an informal assigment to state who I would(if I could) nominate for a Nobel Peace Prize and why. I am drawing a complete blank. I don't really get into this sort of thing very much. If anyone could help with maybe some ideas of some people who have done some really good things recently would help. I would really like to keep it off of the politics though. Maybe someone who discovered a cure for something here recently or developed some new type of medicine, and or treatment for an otherwise untreatable disease. I've tried googling some stuff but have not ran across anything that sparked my interest yet.

Um . . . you can't avoid politics if it's a Nobel Peace Prize. By definition, that goes to someone who has advanced the cause of peace, usually by helping to end a serious military conflict. Finding a cure for a disease might net someone a different sort of Nobel prize, as might writing a good book.

Assuming that you have to pick a Peace Prize nominee, you could go with either George W. Bush (for bravely removing a horrible dictator) or Obama (for pulling troops out of a place America had no business being in). I guess you could do a search for notable peace activists if you wanted a less polarizing figure.

Yes, that is what I was going to suggest. Search for peace activists and use the word list in your search. After you choose one, it is just a matter of writing a little bio about them and a little blurb about the prize itself.

It seems tough, though, because for anyone you tink of, there is someone who perhaps has done more. Do some research about the atrocities going on in the world, and you'll find the heroes.

Can't organizations be nominated? For instance in 2005 the prize went to International Atomic Energy Agency for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way. In 2007 the prize went to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.

I guess what I'm saying is I'd rather try to think of someone or oganization along these lines instead of the 2008 winnder, Martti Ahtisaarifor his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts.

Unfortunately, the examples you give are mostly examples of the UN patting itself on the back. The International Atomic Energy Agency reports to the UN, though it is technically a separate entity, while the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Control was founded by two UN organizations. Neither really had much to do with making the world more peaceful . . . the prizes were just UN propaganda, meant to make itself look as if it actually mattered. If you are going to select a person or organization for a peace prize, you should do a better job, and find someone or some group of people who genuinely have made a contribution to making the world more peaceful. However, I see no reason why you couldn't pick an organization over an individual, if you can find one that qualifies.

I completely agree with what your saying EF Sean. That is part of the reason I am having a hard time with this assignment. I really can not think of anyone or an organization worthy. I do not keep up with that area of politics very much. I know I probably should but I guess I am just more focused on my own little world. All the politic related stuff I am exposed to is not very peaceful but usually the exact opposite.

What I was really thinking about doing was writing a nomination for the Truth antismoking organization. I know they have not done anything to promote peace but I feel their efforts have done a lot to promote the well being of people.

Does anyone have any comments on that? Good idea or bad idea?

Ok so I just read the definition of the Nobel Peace Prize. And I don' think that the Truth organization fits into this category. Maybe another Nobel Prize but by defintion not the Peace Prize. So now I'm back to square one. I know this would normally not be that hard of an assigment but I guess I just have a different outlook on life than a lot of people do.

Personally I would try to find an individual or organization that is trying to help with the Darfur situation.

I'm thinking about doing my paper on nominating Bono from the band U2. Does anyone have any comments on that? Although I don't agree with a lot of his political views, I don't think anyone can deny his efforts in trying to make the world a better place.

Ok i did the Bono thing. it worked out very well. there was a lot of information out there to use.

I think that Bono would be a fine topic. Not only would you be able to garner lots of information, but he has worked for peace in a unique way. If your assignment requires books as one of your sources, it might be a little more difficult to find the information you will need.
