"Fly fishing" - I need help with my persuasive essay topic

I am doing a project on fly fishing and along with my project I have to write a persuasive paper on it. I was asked to develop my own topic for the paper. This is what I came up with:

Fly fishing is the careful and delicate presentation and manipulation of an artificial fly to hook, play, and land fastidious fish, using a precise manual method of casting.

I sent this to my teacher and she asked me how it was persuasive. She noted that it was a good thesis statement. The way I look at it is that I state that fly fishing is the careful and delicate presentation etc. and in my paper I will persuade that my statement is correct. Am I viewing my topic the wrong way or is this a valid persuasive topic for my essay? Could this perhaps also double as my thesis statement as well?

Good evening. You do have a great thesis statement; this is just something that tells your reader/teacher what it is that you are going to discuss in your paper at length. I believe that you are approaching the topic from a good angle, you just need to add in the details. You could explain why you have to be careful (what is the result if you are not?), what makes manual casting the most successful approach? Things like this. That will help you lengthen your thesis statement into an actual paper.

How could I turn this into a persuasive essay topic?

A persuasive paper is one that gets a reader to agree with your position. What are you going to pursuade your readers about? As I wrote earlier, "You could explain why you have to be careful (what is the result if you are not?), what makes manual casting the most successful approach? Things like this."

Fly fishing is a more careful and delicate presentation and manipulation of an artificial fly to land fish using a precise manual method of casting as compared to conventional methods which require less skill and minimal knowledge of fish and their habits.

One suggestion:

This is much better. This is a stance that you can defend, a "side" to "choose," if you will. This will be a much easier foundation in which to write the rest of your persuasive paper.
