I would start by throwing some salt over my left shoulder and circling my desk three times! Just kidding...
I think you should start by listing some odd superstitions from around the world, and reasons why they might have developed. This can be a fun and interesting essay! You could ask people you know to describe any superstitions they or older relatives have. My grandmother was very superstitious, she would not have any picture depicting birds in her house, got upset when people she loved wore pearls, ("pearls are for tears", she said)
