I have to write a literary analysis paper, and i really dont know how to structure it or anything , i really need help, but my focus question will be: did Clare fall down the stares on purpose or did Irene push her? i thought it would be a good question to answer because the book gives a lot of evidence. hi, purplesweetay? In my opinion, you should begin your essay with an interesting introduction part related to your topic. Then your essay body part should totally consists of 3 paragraphs, each with a reasonable reason and 3 ideal examples, which can prove your reason, and you should finish your essay with a conclusion which must be based on your above reasons and examples. How about this?

did Clare fall down the stares on purpose or did Irene push her?

Sounds okay... but I'm not familiar with the story. The answer is not obvious, is it? If it is obvious, it won't make a good essay.

That's some good advice from Byamba, but I want to add another suggestion:
Write the intro last!

One essay = one big idea.
one paragraph = one smaller idea.

Write the body paragraphs. They contain the 3 or 4 ideas that all mash together into your main idea. Know what I mean?

You have to write a paragraph about each of the ideas expressed in the essay, one paragraph=one idea, and then you will know WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. You will know your message.

Only then will you be ready to introduce it.

Is it easier to read the book or to post the question and wait for answers? If I answer, I will be saying the same thing you find if you look on Google for it: Passing, Nella Larsen, analysis

Google those words, and you will find articles where people talk about the book
But have you tried actually reading the book? You might really like Larson! If you have trouble understanding it, though, read some analyses of it. That always helps.
