You'll have to provide more information for anyone to help you brainstorm. Is this informative essay for college admissions or for a particular class? If for admissions, what is the school's culture, if for class what did your professor say when giving the assignment. Are you an expert in anything? Is there a subjec that motivates you?

Please help us help you.

The essay is for my english class it can either be personal or about a certain social issue that I am interested in. I am interested in like health/medical issues there are so many topics to choose from but I don't know exactly which one I would like to write about. I am thinking about the Stem Cell Research topic. I don't want to make it an argumentative paper just talk about it in general.

Hi, this sounds great! Amber, your advice is awesome... in the fuure, you can tell if an essay is for admissions or not by looking at the category. This is in "Essays and Term Papers" so you know it is probably not for admissions. Amber, please check out the EF Contributor page (link at te bottom of the screen)!!!

:)

Yesenia, it is great to hear that you are interested in medicine. This paper will be easiest if you choose a topic you already know about... but it will be most rewarding if you choose a topic you are interested in but have to research a little. If you are a student interested in medicine, I suggest you do this informative essay about "The World Full of Healing Sciences" or something like that. You can inform the reader with overviews of Chinese medicine, Swedish massage, Psychotherapy, Feldenkrais, Polarity Therapy, Shiatsu, Japanese Sotai, Indian Ayurvedic medicine, hypnosis and NLP... and the list goes on.

Make this essay an experience that might determine your course of study! :)

An essay on stem cell research that tried only to inform, rather than to argue a political position, might actually be quite interesting. What exactly has stem cell research accomplished? What is its potential? That sort of thing.

Good luck with creating your first draft, whatever topic you go with.

Stem Cell Research in General

In the world of Bio-Medicine the focus of researching Stem cells has become important to scientists. Many wonder if putting such importance into a study will be worth time and money and if the potential benefits that scientists are optimistic about will ever occur. Stem cell research has the potential of developing new medical treatments for human genetic diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Diabetes Type I, Cancer, Alzheimer's, and any other injuries that affect individuals. There are many pros and cons that surround this study on stem cells. One must know what makes up stem cells, their importance to Medicine, the debate that surrounds it on being ethically and morally acceptable to society and the accomplishments that this research has already implemented onto Medicine in order to develop an opinion on whether stem cells should be used or not.

Known as Regenerative Medicine, stem cell research is advancing knowledge of how an organism produced from one single cell has the ability to reproduce itself in many ways to replace damaged cells in adult organisms. "Stem cells are cells that have the function of reproducing indefinitely and converting into mature cells with special functions."(National Research Council, Institute of Medicine) The interest in stem cell research is mainly based on the desire of scientists to learn more about what makes up stem cells and how they are a great source in finding healthier cures for patients without the need of sacrificing other lives to find organs. With the studying of stem cells scientists have the opportunity of figuring out what makes these cells develop the way they do and what makes them so significant to Medicine. Better understanding of Genetics during cell development is another reason why stem cell research is a focus to scientists because then they can understand why cells develop abnormally from others producing birth defects and cancer; with better knowledge of cell development scientists can prevent such result.(Englert)

The development of new medical treatments will help face human diseases, conditions, and disabilities and alleviate suffering for individuals. Diseases like brain damage, cancer, spinal cord injury, and other genetic illnesses would benefit from new treatments and in order for that to happen a renewable source of replacement cells and tissue would be needed. The testing of new medicine on the reproduced cells will avoid the use of animals and humans as testers. With this action scientists will be able to find problems that the new medicine would go through while being experimented with the cells.

Inside the human body, stem cells are identified in the early stages of an embryo; they are capable of dividing and renewing for long periods of time. They are unspecialized with the ability of becoming any type of cell tissue in the body. There are two types of stem cells embryonic and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are obtained from aborted embryos or from leftover fertilized eggs from the process of In-vitro fertilization. They have the potential of becoming a wide variety of specialized tissue cells for different organs of the body. Adult stem cells are found in different tissues of organs such as "bone marrow, blood, the eye, brain, skeletal muscle, dental pulp, liver, skin, the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, and pancreas"(National Research Council, Institute of Medicine) they also have the ability to renew and make identical copies of each other as long as the original organism still preserves life.

Stem cell research is a topic that is surrounded by plenty of controversy, since its discovery "in the year of 1998 by scientist James Thomson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison when he developed the first embryonic stem cell" (National Research Council, Institute of Medicine). Issues with this research arise from the techniques used in the creation and usage of stem cells. The most controversial research is the embryonic stem cell because in order to build up a stem cell line it's necessary to destroy a human embryo (Stem Cell Controversy) and with this action many problems arise, especially in the areas of ethics, morals, and religious grounds.

Ethics is a main argument questioned in the development of stem cell research. Supporters for the research believe that an embryo is not considered a human being after forty days of development. Scientists believe in getting rid of human suffering. Those against the research believe that depriving a human embryo of fully developing into a human being is ethically wrong because there is no such thing of making stem cells to cure diseases that exist. In the moral area it's considered disrespectful to interfere in the development of life. Conservative and religious supporters believe that human life begins at the moment of conception and that all humans have the moral obligation to preserve life by all means whether or not health issues are a part of it. Opposing views would accept adopting a new moral technique of ridding the use of human stem cell research and just use the embryonic stem cell procedure. This has motivated the movement of "pro-life" a group of members that have grown an interest in preserving the rights of early staged embryos.(Stem Cell Controversy)

Religious views have also been a part of this research also believing whether or not life should be halted of continuing its development as a human being. In (National Research Council, Institute of Medicine) Rabbi Elliot Dorff and Moshe David Tendler stated that in Jewish law an embryo has no moral standing after forty days of fertilization, and that the child is viewed a s part of a mother's body when born. A different religious view is seen when a catholic priest states that life begins at the moment of conception and that life is protected from that moment.

There are many obstacles that this research faces as a whole. Most importantly is the acceptance of the public, if the public had a better understanding of the research there wouldn't be many opposing views. Secondly, technical problems arise of not having the advanced equipment to discover more strategies of stem cell development in laboratories. Third, would be not having enough of a large population of stem cells extracted from patients, especially when cells that have been worked on don't show the results that are needed to be useful for treatments. Last would be not having enough public and federal funding to continue with the research necessary to continue finding cures for diseases. Just recently President Obama signed an Executive Order of lifting the ban on federal funding for stem cell research making it possible for scientists, doctors, researchers, and innovators to receive enough funding to continue with their research and to hopefully one day find cures for the many illnesses that don't have treatments available.

This research has accomplished many advances since its discovery in the late nineties. Bone marrow and umbilical stem cells transplantations have been discovered and are currently used to treat patients with Leukemia and Lymphoma. (Stem Cell Treatments) With the ban lift of federal funding the stem cell research will advance even more.

With the furthering of medical science many discoveries have been made in past centuries that have transformed our lives. Whether stem cell research will have that same impact on our lives is still to be determined but it only helps us realize that there are people who are interested in finding ways to rid the suffering that many individuals face on a day to day basis. Controversy will always be part of stem cell research, the potentials are great and with proper guidance and enough research the outcomes that many are awaiting will develop.

In the world of Bio-Medicine the focus of researching Stem cells has become important to scientists.

This is a boring opening line, and also, I don't think you are supposed to capitalize "stem."

Maybe you should start with this line: Many wonder if putting such importance into a stem cell research will be worth the time and money it requires and if the potential benefits that some scientists expect will ever occur.

Also, th word medicine... I think it should not be capitalized.

One must consider what makes up stem cells, their importance to Medicine, the debate that surrounds it on being ethically and morally acceptable to society; one must also consider the accomplishments that this research has already made possible for medicine in order to develop an opinion on whether stem cells should be used or not.

Usually, the parenthetical reference goes BEFORE the period, and articles are put in " " marks in MLA:

This has motivated the movement of "pro-life" a group of members that have grown an interest in preserving the rights of early staged embryos ("Stem Cell Controversy" ).

This is greatm though! For sure.
