Hi Ankita!

I think it is reasonable to begin with doing some research on this. Maybe if you form a personal opinion you'll know where to start. Your essay should contain your points of view after all, not those of other people.

It doesn't matter if you don't get it right the first time, we're here to help ;D

I'm sorry, I don't know what brain drain is!!! I'll google it.

Oh... I see what it is. Well, you need to discuss ways to get the skilled people to stay in India. How can they be compelled to stay in India? Check out this part called "prevention"... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_capital_flight#Preventative_measures

You should search for articles about: brain drain, india
Also search for: human capital flight, india

Read the articles, and compare the arguments of the authors. If you find 3 or 4 great articles, you can explain their ideas and make an argument that is uniquely your own.

At the end of the first paragraph, try to write a sentence that expresses your main insight (i.e. in a single sentence).

Hi Ankita,
I think its quite an easy topic and u can get tonnes of points on it..

-> Writing an essay is an art... when u have to write an argumentative essay u need to bifurcate it into four parts with the advantage n disadvantage of respective views.

the above topic can be divided mainly into advantages and disadvantages.. i would like to give u brief help as to how u might start this essay:

INTRODUCTION-

- define " brain drain"
- give examples of countries where this has become an alerting problem.
- state your own opinion - u think people go abroad righteously or should they stay in their own country.??

MAIN BODY-

the main objective in an essay is to have a good flow.
Paragraph 1 :

so maybe you can state the main reason for brain drain.

- lack of proper education system.
-lack of support from the government.
-corruption in education system.
-lack of proper infrastructure
- lack of adequate facilities
-dim future prospects
-lack of exposure
-outdated syllabi (specifically in India where we have been studying the same syllabus since last two decades in engineering without any changes associated with the modern technology used in industries.)

- tough competition-> sometimes students find it easier to get admitted in foreign univ than their own coz of cut-throat competition.
-no proper faculty
-bad future prospects.
-not good salaries available

(u can write all of these or some of them-whichever u agree with)

PARAGRAPH 2:

write the advantages of studying or moving out in foreign countries to an individual.
for example:

-international exposure
- limitless opportunities
- handsome salaries
-exchange rate (i would say this is a major factor/advantage as people send dollars/pounds/euros to their home country where they get multiplied 10/20/30...many times.)

-better living standards.

paragraph 3:

in this paragraph u need to state the disadvantages of brain drain to a country.
u can say that its a bad attitude to leave one's own motherland... this will increase illegal immigration... it can also lead to economic imbalance...

paragraph 4:
in this para state in what ways india can prevent its people from option to go abroad...

(personally i really dont wanna criticize the indian education system on an international forum...u urself know what needs to be fixed... )
i would give u an example : in india, a student gets a student loan when he has a sound bank-balance, that too on an interest rate of 11-13.5% p.a on loans above rs. 4 lacs... n above all that - for a small period of 5-7 years...on the other hand- in USA (as far as i know), students get student loan for around an interest rate of 5-8% p.a. n for a period of 5-30 years... now do u think a student would like to really live in india when he is getting the least support possible from the government.???

CONCLUSION:

just summarize the whole essay and again state ur opinion strongly again

NOTE - this is the way i would have liked to write the essay...u must b having ur own style n views... so suit-urself accordingly...i hope it helps...

QUOTE FOR U:

Hi all.. thank you for your replies.

@ Kevin: you've been such a support, every time.

@Mr. Ajit Rai: your invaluable suggested are indeed of great help.
but following instructions were given to write this essay.
1. Answer all parts
2. Demonstrate originality
3. Present thought provoking point of view
4. English language proficiency to a level, where undue strain isn't placed on the reader
also the limit of the words is 300 only and when I drafted the essay, the word limit got extended and I was not able to cover all the points which u had instructed.

Anyways i have tried my level best to write it, and pasting it for the perusal.

The exodus from the homeland due to the bureaucracy, red tapeism and many other reasons isn't a mere migration of a certain sect of the skilled or unskilled people but this brain drain costs the developing nations a lot.

It no doubt gives the individual a good exposure, when he/she leaves home and property behind to gamble for life in a place full of opportunities to gain highest echelons. But this virtual metempsychosis of natives, who leave their ancestral abodes, in quest of better future has become an alerting problem especially in the poor countries, which are yet to stabilize themselves.

In India there are ample reasons behind brain drain like lack of proper education system, unavailability of proper infrastructure and other prevalent hindrances.

With the mushrooming of the colleges in India, a very large population of engineering graduates is passing out every year. These new entrants get the salary, which doesn't justify their qualification. The government needs to provide enough avenues for the fresh graduates, help them join the mainstream and contribute towards the development of the country.

Government needs to avoid taking the narrow road and make a hassle-free environment over a broader demography by abolishing the outdated obstacles.

The government can further relieve the aspiring professional students by introducing tax-cuts and exemptions. That way, as far as the expenditures incurred are concerned, a student undergoing graduation from an Indian institute should be brought at par with the one pursuing his studies in the USA where one is liable for an interest rate of 5-8% p.a., unlike in India where the rates are as high as 11-13.5% p.a.

Due to this brain-drain, India loses $2 billion a year. Government needs to lay down a well-thought roadmap and work bullishly to bring about a radical change in this matter.

hope you all will do the corrections (if needed)

The exodus from the homeland due to the bureaucracy, red tapeism and many other reasons isn't a mere migration of a certain sect of the skilled or unskilled people but this brain drain costs the developing nations a lot.

This sentence is very complicated and confusing. Simplify if you can...
The exodus of skilled workers from India is caused by _____________________. -----I don't know if it is caused by bureaucracy. It might be caused by the fact that better opportunities exist elsewhere. Anyway, in this first sentence just tell what you think the reasons are.

Then say:
Brain drain costs the developing nations a lot. (After this, you can end the first paragraph by giving a thesis statement that expresses your main argument.

In India there are ample reasons behind brain drain like lack of proper education system, unavailability of proper infrastructure and other prevalent hindrances.---Good sentence!!

With the mushrooming of the colleges in India, a very large population of engineering graduates is passing out emigrating every year. ----"Passing out" means "falling unconscious." :-)

Due to this brain-drain, India loses $2 billion a year.--I think you should tell where you found this number. How do you know it is 2 billion?

Government needs to lay down a well-thought roadmap and work bullishly to bring about a radical change in this matter.---another great sentence.

:-)

@debarati1_sl
Sorry dude. You can apply for the scholarship only if u have a score above 6.5

@guptaradhika11
I'm not a person who has availed the scholarship, but one of your fellow competitors. I have some friends with quite a good insight in the selection process, who helped me out.

The personal interview is more like an informal session. The presentation is what you have to worry about. That will be the final hurdle.

Yes the better the IELTS Score, better the chances. But you can't bank on it. I have an overall band score of 8. So do 100's of others. And many others with 8.5 too. They also take into consideration the course you are opting as they try to give away the scholarships to a wider range rather than multiple awards to same field of study.

Hello friends. It is good that this thread started by me,has become actually a discussion club..where even I got some more information about BC scholarship. However I am doubtful in one regard, whether the shortlisted candidates will be given a topic on spot and they will have to present it or else it will be given beforehand,I mean 10-20 min before..

Also what exactly do they mean by presentation? I mean do we need to prepare a power point presentation or speak on it for 10 min or else pen down our opinions..

Also If any one of you could, tell me about some more scholarships, which British Council or any other external funding body offers..it will of great help!!

Hope you guys will help me to resolve all these queries. :)

You will be given the topic ahead of time and so will have a few days to prepare. You just need to talk about the given topic no need of PPT presentation.

98% scholarship dates have gone by, if u are applying for the sep '11 intake. But there is a plethora of scholarships available if you wish to apply for later dates.

All the best
