In-class essays--how to improve on them?

Hello, EssayForum.

I have a problem: I'm horrible. horrible, horrible on in-class essays, The limited time prevents me from any insightful commentary; plus, I have no time for revision. That is a huge issue since I believe editing is an essential component to writing good essay (for me anyways).

I am sure of my ability to write. I get high 90's for at-home essays, whereas 70's on in-class ones. How do I change this? Do I write more practice essays with a timeline? How did you improve --if you did?

Thank you very much.

I have a problem writing in class essays too. But I have improved my scores by planning what I am going to write first. I know that having a time restraint is stressful, but I find it helpful to make a brief outline before I start. It helps me collect my thoughts and make my paper more organized! Good luck!

i think timeline is so helpful because prepare you for all kind of exams...without timeline you think 2 or 3 hours and wast your time...

I find that a great way to improve any writing skills, whether it's for in-class or on-your-own-time essays, is to read. I don't just mean the course material either. The more you read, the more experience you have with language and sentence structure. Even though you're not writing what you read, you still become better associated with proper writing techniques, word usage, etc.

Dear obfuscation,

It seems as though you are given less and less time to write more and more. It used to be 45 minutes for a 5 or 6 paragraph essay test. Now they give you 30 minutes!

Steps that brought me at least an A- on all of my essay tests:

1) Read the question 3 times.

2) Read the passage at least twice before brainstorming

3) Create a mental picture of your thesis statement

4) Use scrap paper to jot down examples

5) Write the three or four supporting paragraphs. Leave room for the introduction.

6) Eat a small piece of candy. Write the introduction.

7) Write the conclusion.

If you are taking a final, make sure to drink a soda with a lot of caffeine in it beforehand. It's legal, and it's a turbo booster for your brain.
