Wow, congratulations! It depends on your interests. What industry interests you? some ideas: transformational leadership, the resource based view of management, emotional intelligence, the "American Dream," the effects of the threat of terrorism on employees in your industry...

If you google research topics you can get many ideas, but make sure it comes from the heart, so you can get inspired from it! What type of work environment do you hope to get into?

Hey Kevin,

I think it is still too broad, and you should narrow it down more. One great way to narrow down a topic is to combine two ideas together. Like combine conflict management and the concept of "emotional intelligence," (Goleman). You can combine it with any topic, and then it will be a unique approach to conflict management.

:)

You also can add in 'the challenges that will encounter in the workplace because of cultural differences'. This is a very interesting topic to discuss. Thought?

One easy approach is to search a database for this:
"human resource management" case study

or HRM case study

or choose a topic within HRM that interests you, like

"employee training" case study.

You can find LOTS of case studies in databases, because one of the main qualitative research designs is "case study design"

So search for case studies and you will see many options. I often use Questia, but it costs $$. So. you can use your school's library database.

[Moved from]: Suggest a topic for research In human resource management

Hi,
I have to write a research Paper/ Synopsis to get into PHD. I am thinking about 'Cultural diversity in workforce' as a topic. But it seems too broader. I need help to select a topic.

Yes, it's too broad. The thing to do is read several RECENT articles and see what the most recent research findings are. Go to a good database of journal articles and search for this:

cultural diversity employees

the articles you find will include some "reviews of literature," and they will tell you all the most important stuff that has been done recently with this topic!! You will see what research is being done, and you can add to it just like adding to a conversation when you walk into the room where people are talking about a particular subject.

You might find that people are researching ways to promote strong "organizational culture" while integrating various cultural groups in a diverse work force. You may want to write about the connection between organizational culture and ordinary "culture" (i.e. ethnicity and heritage).

You may want to do research to show what managers say about their struggles to overcome cultural barriers.

Your job right now is to read a lot of research studies. :-) Get familiar with what is happening in the field. you can do it in a single evening.

create competitive advantage by managing diversity-----good!

Search the database for organizational culture and multicultural.

I found this one for you:
A Double-edged Sword: Organizational Culture in Multicultural Organizations by Trefry

:-)

Sometimes one good article can get your brain to start generating all kinds of ideas.

Thanks :) What should be the source of literature review. Is journal articles are quite enough or should necessarily include some books.

Pls tell me some more ways to go ahead.

Oh, I'm sorry, in my last response I had not seen this part! :-)

Well, you also have to choose an industry to focus on...

What should be the source of literature review. Is journal articles are quite enough or should necessarily include some books.

Don't make it too hard for yourself. Books are longer and it might stop you before you begin. Choose ONE journal article as your foundation. If you read an article and it is confusing, move on to the next one. Soon, you will find one that has a lit review all about competitive advantage and managing diversity.

The lit review will tell all about research that has been done about the topic, and it will give you ideas. You MUST read many articles in order to get familiar with the lit review, and then you must choose ONE of those articles to use as a model while you write.

You can't avoid reading many articles. It is the only way to learn how to write one. If you need more help, read several articles and list them here. I'll take a look at some of them if I can, and we can talk about methods.

When you see an article you like, you may want to use the same research design. If you like an article that uses a case study approach, ask your teacher if you can use a case study approach.

Now I have spent a lot of time helping you, so I hope you will help some other people by commenting on their essays!! :-)

Well, don't write in all capital letters...

"Personal Ego at Work Place is Detrimental to Growth of an Organisation."

The ways to strengthen overall organisational ability by mitigating personality differences, exploiting compatible attributes, and encouraging performance based on organisation goals.

This (above) is what I got from your idea. Does that seem right?

Sometimes just doing a little research on a broader topic like what you have here will help you drill down and pick something more specific that you'd like to focus on. Take a look at some scholarly articles online based on this topic and I'm sure you'll find something more specific that interests you that you can base your research paper on.

The place to go is a recent research article that interests you. Use it as your starting point. Just try to enjoy reading articles that interest you, and if they are professional journal articles many of them will have a literature review. You can read about all the work that has been recently done in your area of interest -- what research questions are being answered recently and what new questions do they raise?

For someone to suggest a topic requires them to CATCH UP with the scholarly discourse that is happening in your area of interest. One good article with a literature review can catch you right up to what is happening. That way, you can ask yourself what is the next logical step for scholars addressing the problems that need to be addressed in the field.

If you find a good article with a literature review, you can post the name of it in this thread and write a few sentences about the main idea. That will help you to know how to make a meaningful contribution to the "conversation" that is happening among scholars like you.
