On The Wire
"Analyse how techniques of a genre or text type has influenced you makes a text particularly effective for you."
The language techniques in the poem "dulce et decorum est" by Wilfred owen,"on the wire" by Robert service and the "deserter" by Winifred Letts made the texts effective because they allowed to understand the idea of war being horrific.
"On the wire", a poem by Robert service portrays the cruel effects of world war through the use of several effective language features . "It's laughing the cursed sun, see how it swells and swells". Service, uses personification to show the readers that's the sun is responsible for causing the soldiers pain. This also illustrates that the sun is experiencing pleasure and enjoyment at the expense of the sufferings by the "man on the wire". The irony behind this statement is that most people would associate the sun with giving life however service has portrayed it to the reader as something that would cause pain. The soldier's perception of the sun is emphasised thought out the poem, it makes the reader think that the real enemy in this situation is the sun and not the Germans*. "The sky is a torrent of fire" is another extract from the poem which displays the horrific conditions of the sun. Service uses metaphor to show how the sky has become a river of fire. This gives the effect that the heat from the sky is inescapable and intense which highlights and emphasises that the weather caused discomfort to the soldier. The author has given the impression that the sun was a painful obstacle for the soldier on the wire as he could not escape from it. Service has allowed the reader to understand the pain the soldier faced by putting a lot of emphasis on the sun through various language techniques.
One would think that being in the war is enough but service has put the soldiers beyond their limits. "On the wire" has attempeted ti show the harsh- conditions of the heat however Wilfred own suggest other wise. Own has tried to illustrate the harsh effects of the cold weather in the poem " exposure". "sudden successive flights of bullets streak the silence, less deathly then the air that shruders it". This shows to us that both aspects of the weather were causing more pain then the actual war itself.
The poem "deserter" by Winifred Letts reveals the horrific effects of war, both at a personal and interpersonal level through the use of several effective language techniques. "Whom fear had dogged by night and day, he could not face the German guns". This extract refers to how fear had taken control of the soldier's life and as a result he was not able to perform his duties in war. Letts used personification to transform the fear into a dog to show the reader that it was inescapable. The extract is ironic because one would expect a soldier to fight their enemy's which in this case is the Germans however this soldier is fighting his fear. The author has clearly shown the enemy both at a personal and inter-personal level; he has shown that the real enemy for this soldier is fear. Winifred Letts has shown how brave some of the other men must have been. This allows the reader to understand that not all men were suited for war however the still went. It shows that they had to overcome the fear of dying signifying their true extent of bravery. Winifred Letts has addressed the reader making them feel grateful that they weren't in World War one. *Soldiers in 1914 weren't trained and many were young and reckless however in there modern times, all soldiers undergo extensive training so they are fit to be in the battlefield*. Winifred Letts address the reader in the poem to take their perspective of fear on the battlefield. "He turned and runaway, but who can judge him you or I". The abstract clearly shows that the fear overwhelmed the soldier. He tried to escape the battlefield in an attempt to get rid of his fear. Irony is shown in this extract as, Most people would expect a soldier to die from enemy bullets however in the "deserter" the soldier is killed by his fellow soldiers. Winifred Letts directly questions the morals and ethics of the reader, through the use of a rhetorical question. "Who can judge him you or I"? He has attempted to recreate the situation in the readers mind while also trying to take their perspective of the situation. Letts has asked the reader if running away was the right thing to do. **relate it to techniques and stuff*
In "Dulce et decorum est." Wilfred own explores the horrific implications war had on soldiers through the uses of several language techniques. Own describes how the traumatic events of war lingered on with the soldiers. "In all my dreams before my helpless sight, he plunges at me guttering, choking, and drowning." This extract explains how the violent and agonizing death of a soldier affected others. Owens aim to show the reader that the horrific experiences of war were relieved in every dream which was a never ending war.
Through the effective use of onomatopoeia and irony Owen describes the excruciating death of the soldier. The quote refers to how a solider was painfully gassed to death. Not only does this show that the man is suffering but that he is in terrible pain that no human being should endure. Own used this to show that the surroundings changed from a familiar place into an inhospitable environment in a limited amount of time. Wilfred own has helped me to understand that the traumatic events in war affect soldiers long after the war itself. In a way, he has described the post-war trauma being more horrific then the actual war itself. This is because the war itself may have lasted four years but the long term effects lasted for ever .Wilfred own uses various language techniques to help the reader understand the horrific nature of war. "Behind the wagon that we flung him in, and watch the white eyes writhing in his face, his face likes a devil sick of sin." Own uses alliteration to emphasise the adjectives, such as white and sick, this makes the overall sentence more effective and memorable for the reader. The author used imagery in the extract to show how the dead were treated. The extract also shows to us that the soldier was treated with no respect; it reveals the cruelness within war since people would not expect a soldier to be treated like rubbish. Own, uses a metaphor to show how traumatic and violent the soldiers deaths are. He compares the devil to the soldiers face. This comparison shows that there has been a complete transformation. The devil, being sick of sins is a complete change from good to bad whereas the soldiers face has also transformed and is now unrecognizable. "Dulcet et decorum est." is a poem that allowed me to understand and realise my own amount of luck next to people who were affected by war. Reading this poem made me appreciate that my own life or the lives of my loved ones had not been burdened with the terrors of war. It has also allowed me to see how lucky we are that soldiers risked their lives during 1914 so we could have a peaceful life; something which many of them didn't and never will have.

Own is comparing the physical condition of the soldiers to the beggars. He has portrayed them as weak and feeble. This is ironic because the reader would expect a soldier to be fit and strong however own has portrayed him in the complete opposite way. The use of emotive language allows the reader to understand to true extent of difficulties. Wilfred own has given a harsh perspective on war
"Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots but limped on, blood shod. All went lame; all blind" This quote from the poem explains the struggles and difficult conditions of war. Through this quote we are able to understand that the soldiers had very limited resources and as a result faced many injuries and problems. The author intendeds to show that the men were not suited for war. "Limped on, blood shod". As a result of not having shoes the soldier have become blood shod. Own made an indirect comparison that the men are worse off than horses as they are getting illnesses which are easily preventable. The first part of the extract "men marched asleep" uses alliteration and hyperbole to show how the true extent of the soldiers exhaustion. This tells us that they do not have suitable conditions to rest and that they have not slept for a long time. Furthermore, it suggests that they are all in horrific mental and physical states while also suffering from excruciating pain. The language techniques such as alliteration and hyperbole make the sentence more memorable while also allowing the reader the reader contemplate the situation. It made me realise that the soldier must have been suffering a lot of pain due to the horrific conditions in the
