hi everyone

I was wondering if someone could help. I have to write a literary analysis paper on a poem called "To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell". I don't know if this poem is familiar to everyone.

I have to make my own interpretation of the work focused on a clearly defined idea. I must have a good thesis statement, and support & develop each point in my argument based on textual evidence (poem). It has to be 3-4pages length.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas how to approach this paper. For my thesis statement, Could I say something like " In 'To His Coy Mistress', Andrews Marvell uses imagery to create the atmosphere of the personality and character of the young man. I need a little bit of bushing up on this statement.

I would like some ideas on how to start introduction and I am not sure about this paper. I would really appreciate your help with ideas and suggestions that i could look at in my paper eg, character, theme, setting, plot etc.

hi, everyone

I forgot to post the poem. To his coy mistress by Andrew marvell.

To His Coy Mistress
Had we but world enough, and time,
This coyness, Lady, were no crime
We would sit down and think which way
To walk and pass our long love's day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges' side
Shouldst rubies find: I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the Flood,
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires, and more slow;
An hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, Lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.

But at my back I always hear
Time's wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found,
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song: then worms shall try
That long preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust:
The grave's a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.

Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may,
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapt power.
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Thorough the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

Greetings!

I think your thesis statement needs to be a bit more concrete. What the poem is really saying is that life is short. The man is telling the woman to stop wasting time being coy and accept his amorous advances before they grow old. It is a somewhat teasing way of saying "Stop fooling around and let's get on with this relationship!" That's essentially the "plot" in a nutshell. The theme could be the brevity of life and/or the fleetness of youth. The man is impatient, but not to the point of being exasperated. There is a certain ironic tone to the poem, as the man tries to nudge the woman into acquiescing.

I hope this helps!

Thank,
