Hello,

I just took the WPE at Cal State Long Beach. English is my second language.

We were ask "to what extend do you agree or disagree" with a statement previously given (recent advances in communication technology may discourage personal communications and people skills).

I said that while I somehow agree with the statement, at the same time one can find many reasons against it. I proceeded by giving several (three) examples in each side and concluded that we cannot categorize the advances as being "good" or "bad"; they are just tools that can be used either way.

Was I wrong in taking both sides? Should have I focused in only one side of the argument and forget about the other?

Thank you,

Brad

Greetings!

I think you were right to give your honest opinion. This is what the topic seems to call for. This is especially true since the question asks "to what extent do you agree or disagree" with the statement. That gives you some latitude for examining both sides of the issue. I'm assuming that your essay stated the ways in which personal communications and people skills might be affected, then gave reasons for the opposing views as well. Like most issues today, this one is complicated and there are no easy answers. As long as you clearly stated your true opinion, you should be just fine.

Thanks, and good luck!

Sarah,

Thank you for your response. Your reply makes me feel a little bit better. The results won't be in for up to six weeks, so your support is appreciated.
I also appreciate your correction of the use of extend/extent. I always mix them up :(

Sincerely,

Brad
