I have to write a research paper on Virginia Tech, but there isn't enough details for it yet. It is for my Psychology class. Any ideas as to what I can discuss in my paper?

Greetings!

This event is so recent, your best sources will probably be news outlets. More than likely, some of the major networks have interviewed psychologists or other mental health professionals about the impact of a tragedy like this on families and communities, and perhaps the country at large. You might also want to bring in other similar tragedies which have impacted our nation, such as Columbine or the murders in the Amish schoolhouse. If you wanted to take a look at how nationally televised tragedies and their aftermaths affect the public at large, you might consider the Oklahoma city bombing, which took place twelve years ago today. I realize your paper must focus mostly on Virginia Tech, but you may need to use past stories to formulate a thesis about how such events impact lives from a psychological standpoint.

Best of luck in your studies!

I have to somehow fit this word "Psychobiology" into my report and just give my opinion about the event.

I'm not an EF moderator, just a member like you but I some suggestions if you'd like...

first look up psychobiology, it seems you may not know much on the subject get a general idea about what it means or implies.

research the man responsible for the masacre and the circumstances that may have pushed him to it, or things that were absent from his life that could have prevented it.

Consider the negative, sometimes it is easier to argue why something did not cause something else.

Now consider psychobiology and you might be able to explain how psychobiology does or does not apply or fit in this case.

You could list supporting and conflicting evidence for psychobiology to help you decide which has more evidence and/or stronger or more decisive evidence as well. (quality vs. quantity)

that could be your thesis why or why not psychobiology explains choe's behavior.
good luck!!

Greetings!

There is little I can add to improve on what mcruz0041 has said--what great suggestions!

The best I can tell from a quick internet search, psychobiology has to do with the relationship between physical and cognitive processes in the body. Perhaps you could address what aspects of physiology, such as brain chemicals, cause cognitive processes (thoughts) which lead a person to take actions such as those.

Good luck!

Greetings!

Your thesis will state the topic of your paper. Essentially, everything in your paper will support that thesis. Therefore, it's very important that you know what direction you want your paper to go. You will take a position with your thesis; probably something as general as "The tragedy at Virginia Tech has been shown through many different types of media" won't cut it. Is there a particular type of media you want to focus on? Will you be criticizing media treatment of the event? Will you be talking about how media treatment of these types of tragedies can fuel new ones? Without knowing a little more about the focus of your paper, it's difficult for me to know how to help you, but I'll give you an example. If, for instance, you were going to take the approach that some types of media do a better job than others, you might want to say something like: "The massacre at Virginia Tech elicited a huge amount of media coverage. The various approaches taken by different types of media colored public perception of this event."

I hope this helps give you some ideas!

Thanks,
